Galaxy Note 8 Leak Reveals Samsung’s Nasty Surprise
Olixar is at is again. Having successfully leaked the iPhone 7 and Galaxy Note 7 last year, the Galaxy S8 in January and revealed the iPhone 8 in glorious detail earlier this week, the popular case maker has contacted me with official cases for the Galaxy Note 8…
So confident is Olixar in its information (and its track record backs this up), the company has put three ranges of Galaxy Note 8 case – FlexiShield, X-Duo and Ultra-Thin – immediately up for pre-order on retailer partner MobileFun’s US and UK sites. Prices range from $5.49 (£4.99) to $26.99 (£19.99).
And what the cases show is both good and bad news.
The good news is the Galaxy Note 8 looks like an even more massive (6.3-inch Vs 6.2-inch) version of the Galaxy S8 Plus coupled with a stylus and exciting dual camera. This is in contrast to a dubious (and hideous) video render of the Galaxy Note 8 released earlier in the week which showed an Xperia-like design I doubt many would want to buy.
So this is a relief, if not a total surprise.
The bad news, however, is likely to prove the bigger story.
What Olixar’s cases also clearly show a cut out for the fingerprint reader on Galaxy Note 8’s back. For months now Samsung has been in a race against time to integrate the reader into the display (like the iPhone 8), but it now appears Galaxy fans will face further disappointment – especially with Apple’s iPhone 8 reader success.
I say “further” because both the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus were expected to feature integrated fingerprint readers back in March and when they missed out the Galaxy Note 8 was widely predicted to fix this. Worst still, the ridiculous fingerprint reader positioning will also be repeated.
This was not lost on Sally Wijers, eCommerce Marketing Assistant at MobileFun, who told me: “These official renders give us a good look at the back of the Note 8, the camera and of course the placement of the fingerprint scanner.”
Given the Galaxy Note 8 will also have a dramatic price increase this is frustrating news, even if multiple hardware leaks suggest the cost will still be worth it.
Then again with 2017 set to deliver the mother of all smartphone battles, I suspect right now there will be smiles at Apple and Google as the redesigned iPhone 8 and supersized Pixel 2 edge closer to release…
