With Her New Song, Taylor Swift Has Tied With Rihanna For The Most No. 1 Hits On This Chart
In the lead up to the release of her upcoming album Reputation, Taylor Swift has been generous with her music, gifting fans with several new songs before the full collection is made available. Because her massive, dedicated fanbase is so desperate for any taste of what she’s been cooking up for the past several years, whenever she drops a previously-unreleased track, it gets snapped up, and this week, Swift has collected another No. 1…and by doing so, she’s earned herself a new spot in the history books.
With 68,000 copies sold online, Swift’s new album cut (or is it a single?) “Gorgeous” takes the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart, which measures the bestselling songs every week in the U.S. It’s important to note that this listing only takes into account actual purchases and not streaming, as is the case with the all-genre, all-encompassing Hot 100.
“Gorgeous,” the third song to be released from Reputation, is her fourteenth No. 1 on that specific tally, which ties her for the most leaders since the ranking was introduced back in 2005, at the height of digital song sales. She is now on par with Rihanna, who has also managed as many chart-toppers, including her work on her own and with singles she has been featured on.
All three Reputation cuts—“Look What You Made Me Do,” “…Ready For It?” and now “Gorgeous”—have started at No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart, though the amount she’s been able to sell has decreased noticeably with each subsequent song.
In addition to having 14 No. 1s to her credit, Swift leads the way when it comes to No. 1 debuts on the tally, which is an even rarer feat. Incredibly, 13 of her 14 champions have started in that position, which shows an amazing amount of immediate awareness and love for any new tunes released by the former country star.
Swift typically likes to keep her upcoming plans regarding single releases quiet, but with the way she’s been operating, it’s entirely possible that she’ll share one more track before Reputation is unleashed on November 10, and it’s likely that if she does, she’ll collect her fifteenth Digital Song Sales No. 1, putting her in first place.
