Taliban attacks tourists including Americans: Taliban militants attacked a convoy carrying about a dozen foreign tourists including three Americans in Afghanistan, according to media reports.
Afghan government spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said police were escorting the tourists when the ambush happened about 90 miles from the western city of Herat, Afghan broadcaster TOLOnews reported.
The Washington Post said at least six people were injured. It reported that the tourists in the convoy included six Britons and one German and said that efforts were underway to airlift the victims to Herat by helicopter.
According to early reports, the tourists were heading to see historical monuments in Herat, TOLOnews said.
In another incident Thursday, six people aboard a Pakistani military helicopter were taken hostage by the Taliban after it crashed in Afghanistan, according to media reports.
The incident happened in Logar province, near the capital of Kabul, on Thursday afternoon, TOLOnews reported.
It reported that Saleem Saleeh, the provincial governor’s spokesman, said the aircraft appeared to have caught fire upon landing while some residents said the Taliban set it on fire after it crashed.
It is unclear what a Pakistani helicopter was doing in Afghan airspace, TOLOnews reported.
