Samsung Confirms Charging Issues for Some Galaxy Note 8s
According to multiple reports, some Galaxy Note 8 owners are experiencing issues when they drain their devices’ batteries completely. Though the problems aren’t widespread, those affected will find their dead devices refusing to charge or power on. Samsung has confirmed the issue to Engadget, noting that it has received “a very limited number of reports which could be associated with the power management circuit.”
If you’re affected by the issue, Samsung advises you get a warranty replacement for your Galaxy Note 8. Though, as SamMobile notes, some users are finding that Samsung might replace their newer Galaxy Note 8s with refurbished Galaxy Note 8s—not an ideal trade-in, but you don’t have much recourse if your smartphone refuses to turn on at all.
“It’s also unclear if this is a hardware or software issue. Some users report that their phone does show the charging circle when connected to a power source but refuses to actually charge, while others say the phone gets warm when connected but the screen remains blank,” SamMobile’s Abhijeet writes. “It’s a similar theme with wireless charging: the blue charging light on the charger comes up, but the phone remains unresponsive, suggesting the software might be to blame.”
To get a little more gas in your smartphone’s tank, you can also try a procedure known as “stack charging,” but it’s going to be a little annoying. Take your dead device and plug it into your charger for around 10 to 15 seconds. Unplug it, wait 30 seconds, and repeat the process. This could take some time, and there’s no guarantee it’ll work, but your smartphone CPR of-sorts could eventually allow it to process a normal charge.
“We are unable to comment further until we obtain more specific information from the phone. Any consumers with questions about their device should contact us directly at 1-800-SAMSUNG so that we can help them,” reads Samsung’s statement.
On the plus side, at least the charging issue affecting some of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 smartphones isn’t going to cause your device to burst into flames, like the battery issues that prompted the big recall of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones.
