Fortnite: Battle Royale’ Servers Going Down For Maintenance Tomorrow, April 5
The Fortnite: Battle Royale backend is in need of a bit of tuneup, it would seem. High Explosive and all other action will cease for a time tomorrow morning as developer Epic Games takes the servers down for maintenance for issues related to scaling, Epic tweeted this afternoon. The downtime will begin at 4:00 AM EST on April 5. There is no official end time, but in the past these maintenance periods have lasted for an hour or two, and sometimes longer — Epic gives no indication that this downtime will take any longer than usual. The best place to check for when it comes back online is the official Fortnite Twitter, but I’ll keep you posted as well.
Fortnite has had various technical issues since last week, ranging from matchmaking to record keeping, login queues at more. During that time the company also released the iOS version to the general public, assumedly opening the door to a wave of new players or at the very least a wave of old players now enabled to play while going to the bathroom. Epic has been quiet about total players ever since January, but the game appears to still be growing, and quickly. That inevitably causes strain on backend services, and that’s what this downtime is all about.
Epic used to deploy patches with new content alongside downtime, but it’s now separated content patches into their own category. We got one of those today, bringing with it Vending Machines, a new “High Explosive” limited time mode, and a range of changes to the shooting mechanics that are already proving controversial — more on that later as players have more time to play with the new features.
Fortnite: Battle Royale is currently one of the hottest titles in video games, but it doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon. With the Android version still on the way and a mysterious comet looming in the sky with unforeseen consequences, the game seems like it’s going to be at the top of the heap for a little while, at least — even with chief competitor PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds stepping up the competition with its own limited time modes and a smaller map intended for more aggressive, quicker matches.
