Stephen Curry, mother Sonya help launch new Jr. NBA initiative:-For parents looking to help their children properly navigate through the youth basketball waters, who better to turn to than basketball’s most beloved mother-son duo?

Stephen Curry and his mother, Sonya, helped launch the Jr. NBA Parent Initiative on Wednesday in Walnut Creek, Calif. The event, which was also attended by Golden State Warriors center Zaza Pachulia and assistant coach Mike Brown, included a youth basketball clinic, a parent workshop and a panel discussion for the families in attendance.

“From my earliest memory playing organized basketball when I was five or six, in Charlotte, I was always going with my mom, or my dad, or both,” Curry, the two-time NBA MVP who over the summer inked a five-year, $201 million deal to stay with the Warriors, said during the event. ” … From the start I understood it didn’t really matter what I was gonna try as a kid, whether it was basketball, baseball, football, she was gonna be there as support and encourage me to get the most out of it, challenge me to push myself, to get wrapped up in my teammates and the whole experience of playing a team sport.”

The new initiative, which, according to the NBA, aims to give parents the resources to “better understand the youth basketball ecosystem” and “create a positive, healthy experience for their young players,” was unveiled as part of the league’s third annual Jr. NBA Week, which began on Oct. 9 and concludes on Monday. All 30 NBA teams are scheduled to host events for the youth in their cities throughout the week.

The NBA also used the week to announce the Jr. NBA Flagship Network, which is made up of 15 youth basketball organizations and is designed to improve how the sport is taught at the grassroots level, as well as the Jr. NBA Coach App, which offers 250 instructional videos and 48 practice plans to youth basketball coaches of all levels.
