Venus, Serena Williams Upset in Doubles First Round at Rio Olympics : There’s a first time for everything. Three-time Olympic doubles champions Venus and Serena Williams lost for the first time in the Olympics in the first round Sunday afternoon in Rio. Lucie Šafářová and Barbora Strýcová of the Czech Republic dominated the Williams sisters from the start, winning 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets.
Venus and Serena entered the match an unblemished 15-0 in the Olympics, claiming the gold medal in women’s doubles every time they stepped on the court: 2000 in Sydney, 2008 in Beijing and 2012 in London.
Earlier in the day, Serena Williams made quick work of her first-round singles match, cruising past Australia’s unseeded Daria Gavrilova 6-4, 6-2. Venus lost her opening singles match on Saturday in a three-hour, three-set duel with Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens.
The American duo was the No. 1 seed in Rio after their 14th Grand Slam championship at Wimbledon just over a month ago.
