Eli Manning: ‘All indications are I will be back’ playing QB for Giants
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — Eli Manning had his streak of consecutive starts snapped, dealt with a coaching change, and faced rumors that his time as a New York Giant may be coming to a close.
On Friday, Manning addressed his future with the team, saying: “All indications are that I will be back and playing quarterback for the New York Giants.”
Manning was speaking on behalf of Courtyard by Marriott, which is giving a pair of fans the chance to sleep at U.S. Bank Stadium on the eve of Super Bowl LII as part of its Courtyard Super Bowl Sleepover Contest.
Last week, the Giants introduced new head coach Pat Shurmur, who is replacing Ben McAdoo, who was fired in December after he went 13-15 in a little less than two seasons and 2-10 in 2017 before his dismissal.
Shurmur, formerly the offensive coordinator of the Vikings, helped Minnesota quarterback Case Keenum have a breakout season when starter Sam Bradford went down at the start of the season with a knee injury. So for the third time in six years, Manning will be playing in a different offense.
“I’ve been around the facility,” Manning said. “I’ve talked to (Shurmur) and looking forward to working with him. I’m starting to learn his playbook and this offense so we can get off to a fast start.”
The window to win for New York with Manning under center, though, is narrowing. He’s 37 years old, and the Giants, who have the No. 2 overall selection in the NFL draft, are expecting to strongly consider taking a passer with the pick.
“We’ve kind of gone through transitions before,” Manning said. “Obviously two years ago with the loss of coach (Tom) Coughlin. I think it’s just a matter of you work hard and you prepare for your training. Going through the spring and continuing to compete to be the best player you can be. Nothing changes from that aspect, you hope nothing changes and we’ll get back on track.”
