Baker Mayfield misses the mark while throwing out ceremonial first pitch at Indians game
The Cleveland Browns caught a lot of heat for making Baker Mayfield the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft on Thursday
And on Friday it was Mayfield throwing the heat.
The 2017 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback joined new teammate and fellow first-round selection Denzel Ward on the mound at Cleveland’s Progressive Field to throw out the first pitch before the Indians’ home game against the Seattle Mariners.
And the results were less than stellar.
Despite being known for his accuracy on the football field — he completed a nation-best 70.5% of his passes at Oklahoma last season — Mayfield missed high and wide to his target.
Mayfield enjoyed a solid baseball career in high school, hitting .338 while playing first and third base and shortstop in two varsity seasons at Austin Lake Travis in Texas.
Mayfield, the first quarterback taken No. 1 overall by the Browns since Tim Couch in 1999, is expected to serve as the Browns’ backup to Tyrod Taylor this season.
