The U.S. States With The Most People In Debt:- Across the United States, 33 percent of people have debt that has gone into collections, meaning they have unpaid bills creditors have either closed or are trying to collect. The Urban Institute recently released numbers on the state of debt across America, and they obtained the data from anonymous consumer-level records from a major credit bureau. The share of Americans holding debt fluctuates hugely between states with the lowest levels recorded in Minnesota (17 percent), South Dakota (18 percent) and North Dakota (19 percent).
Louisiana is at the very opposite end of the scale with almost half of its residents in debt with collections. In 2016 the share of Louisiana residents in debt stood at 46 percent with the median amount owed coming to $1,486. Most of the U.S. states with higher than average debt levels are in the south. Texas comes second with 44 percent of its residents in debt while South Carolina rounds off the top-three with 43 percent.
