Trump headlines fundraiser for New Jersey GOP lawmaker
President Trump headlined his first personal fundraiser Sunday afternoon on behalf of Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-N.J.) at his National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., according to White House pool reports.
MacArthur played an important role in amending the House Obamacare repeal-and-replace bill that ultimately helped it pass in the lower chamber.
The event was closed to the press and White House aides reportedly remained tight-lipped about the event, despite — the pool noted — past presidents previously allowing pool reporters to witness the presidents’ remarks at such closed-door events.
The funds raised Sunday will be split among the MacArthur Victory fundraising committee, the National Republican Congressional Committee and other groups.
The cost to attend the event’s reception started at $5,400 per couple, according to the invitation, while some attendees could pay $25,000 to be a “co-host” or $100,000 to be a “host,” both of which included the reception and “a VIP photo opportunity” that was capped at 20 guests.
Chris Russell, a spokesman for the MacArthur campaign, said about 100 guests at the event raised more than $800,000.
"It was a great event with about 100 guests and the Congressman raised more than $800,000. The theme of his remarks were about making tough decisions and solving problems,” Russell said, according to the pool reports, while pointing out his efforts to repeal and replace ObamaCare.
“He didn't run for Congress to decorate a chair. Obamacare is failing, premiums are rising and choices are dwindling. Tom decided sitting on the sidelines and letting it completely collapse was not an option. His efforts will ensure access to quality healthcare, protect people with preexisting conditions and lower costs for families and small business.”
