Student killed, 2nd injured at high school shooting in Alabama
A 17-year-old female student was fatally shot and another teenager injured in a shooting Wednesday at an Alabama high school, according to the school district.
The shooting happened during dismissal time at Huffman High School, Birmingham City Schools said in a statement. It’s unclear how the gun made it on campus and who fired the shots.
Officers told AL.com that the shooting may have been accidental.
Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said the deceased student would have turned 18 in about 30 days and was a senior “who had aspirations and dreams to be a nurse.” He added, “We are not just talking about some person, (we’re) talking about losing a part of our future. Our hearts are heavy.”
Neither student was immediately identified, and police say they are seeking surveillance video and witnesses to determine what had happened.
Some students told WVTM, a local NBC affiliate, they heard the gunshots and ran from the school. Many said the whole incident reminded them of the high school shooting last month in Parkland, Fla., which left 17 dead.
Worried parents rushed to the school as the campus was placed on lockdown. Photos on social media showed students huddling under desks and using their cell phones.
One mother anxiously waiting outside the school told AL.com that her daughter had texted her about the lockdown.
“I was just hoping my baby was OK, that everybody was OK,” the mother said. “I was nervous. This is so sad.”
