Five missing after Army helicopter crashes off Hawaii:- A massive search is underway for the crew of an Army UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter that crashed in the ocean Tuesday during a nighttime training mission off Hawaii.
Five people were on board, all of them active-duty personnel with the Army’s 25th Combat Aviation Brigade out of Wheeler Army Airfield in Oahu, said Maj. John Landry, a spokesman for the brigade’s parent command. No one has been located or identified, he told The Washington Post.
Rescuers are concentrated on an area two miles off Oahu’s northwest tip, according to the Coast Guard. The incident occurred as two helicopters operated between Kaena Point and Dillingham Airfield, a few miles to the east.
It’s believed the missing Black Hawk went down at 9:30 p.m. local time when personnel at Wheeler lost communication with the crew. Rescuers spotted wreckage in the water, including a piece of the helicopter’s fuselage, about two hours later, officials told Hawaii News Now.
The Coast Guard, the Army, the Marine Corps and the Honolulu fire department have marshaled several aircraft and vessels to help with the search.
