The Sega Ages Game Series Is Coming To The Switch
While Nintendo is still holding back with its Virtual Console service on the Switch, Sega is going to fill that void with its ongoing and excellent Sega Ages games.
Announced at Sega Fes 2018, Sega initially plans to bring Sonic the Hedgehog, Phantasy Star and Thunder Force IV (shown below) to the Switch as part of the Sega Ages line later this year.
Pricing is not known at this point, but the good news is that M2 will be handling the porting of these games and that around 15 releases are currently planned.
For anyone that has enjoyed the Sega Ages releases over the years, either on PS2 or the more recent 3DS entries, then the fact M2 is still onboard for these new Switch releases means that they will be done the way they need to be.
Considering Sega’s arcade gaming heritage, having these Sega Ages on the Switch is a very good fit.
The local multiplayer setup that the Switch affords would work brilliantly for games like Golden Axe or Streets of Rage.
Personally, I just hope we see a port of the original Virtual On. The PS2 release of that game via the Sega Ages line was and still is fantastically good, so I am hoping Sega will undo the recent and mostly awful A Certain Magical Virtual On by making the first game in the series more readily available again.
Anyway, the Sega Ages series is coming to the Switch. With any luck that will mean these ports will come Westward but for now, the Switch has yet another replacement for Nintendo’s perpetually delayed Virtual Console service.
