Drinking after studying can improve memory: study
Drinking after studying can improve memory: study:- College students, rejoice: your decision to party the night before your final might not be such a bad idea.
A new study reveals that information digested before a drinking episode is retained better by drinkers than non-drinkers.
In the University of Exeter study, 88 “social drinkers” performed a word-learning task before the group was split into people who consumed alcohol and those who did not.
The next day, participants performed the same task again — and those who drank more remembered more of what they’d learned.
The researchers don’t think that alcohol improves memory — in fact, just the opposite: because alcohol makes it difficult to retain new information, your memory focuses its efforts on retaining what it has already learned.
“The theory,” said Exeter Professor Celia Morgan, “is that the hippocampus — the brain area really important for memory — switches to ‘consolidating’ memories, transferring from short into longer-term memory.”
Morgan and her team definitely do not recommend binge-drinking; alcohol has many negative effects on memory and mental health, and can lead to blackouts and both short and long term memory loss.
