John Cena joins Bumblebee spin-off
Bumblebee has wrestled up a big name to join the Transformers spin-off.
WWE star and Trainwreck scene-stealer John Cena has been added to the cast of the sixth film in the action series based on the Hasbro toy line.
“One of the most exciting projects I’ve been fortunate to be a part of,” Cena wrote on Twitter. “Thrilled to join the #Transformers franchise.”
Paramount has announced a new release date of Dec. 21, 2018 for the film, which is directed by Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings). Cena rounds out a cast that includes Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), Jorge Lendeborg Jr. (Spider-Man: Homecoming), and Pamela Adlon (Better Things).
Bumblebee, which is the first Transformers film not to be helmed by Michael Bay, is set in 1987 and sees a battle-scarred Bumblee hiding out as a yellow Volkswagon Bettle in a small California beach town. He’s soon discovered in a junkyard by 17-year-old Charlie (Steinfeld).
“Bumblebee’s a very loving character,” producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura previously told EW. “He’s got a lot of heart, so of course the idyllic life of these two is interrupted by the evil Decepticons. And how are they going to be able to deal with the problem without Optimus and without everybody else?”
THR first reported the casting news.
