Guided Missiles Are Gone From Fortnite: Battle Royale. For Now
When Epic first introduced Guided Missiles into Fortnite: Battle Royale, they were somewhat unsurprisingly effective. The ability to deliver a tightly controlled explosive payload anywhere in your immediate vicinity turned out to be something of an unbalanced experience, and Epic is rethinking the whole thing. The developer has announced that it will be temporarily moving the weapons to “the vault” while it figures out what to do with them.
The weapon was already out of the game due to an animation error, but it was scheduled to arrive back, theoretically soon. Now, it appears it will be taking a much longer, possibly permanent hiatus. Here’s what an Epic developer wrote on Reddit:
“We’ve gotten a lot of feedback around the Guided Missile, in particular concerns over fairness and strength of the weapon. We share your concerns, so we’ve put the Guided Missile into the vault while we figure out the next steps for its future.”
The Guided Missile was already powerful when used as intended, but it became even more overpowered once top-tier players got their hands on the thing. They were able to use the Guided Missile to ride their own rockets, zooming across the entire map by hopping from projectile to projectile. We didn’t quite see things develop long enough to see the Guided Missile to become an established part of the endgame meta, but it would clearly have happened had the weapon remained in the game.
Perhaps the Guided Missile will come back in some degree: it wouldn’t be so bad if it were just a little less easy to control, maybe if it were steered more like a vehicle as opposed to directly pointed like a weapon. Whatever the case, I’m skeptical that we’ll see it again: I’d rather see stranger weapons and items along the lines of the Port-a-Fort rather than the ultimately straightforward Guided Missile.
For now, we’ll remember perhaps the purest expression of the Guided Missile’s strangeness: the High Explosive limited time mode that coincided with its introduction to the game. Those few days saw absurd, multi-team battles where everyone found themselves equipped with the typically rare weapon, and it became a strange aerial battle with snaking and curving rockets flying through the skies. I’m fine with that, frankly.
Epic addressed some other issues in the post, from weapon delays to some issues with players accidentally shooting their own structures, and more on that later.
