How weather forced the Blue Jays-Royals game in a dome to be postponed

After two of their weekend games at Cleveland were postponed due to poor weather, the Toronto Blue Jays returned to their climate-controlled home figuring the roof on Rogers Centre would shield them from the elements.

Not so fast.

Due to falling ice from the nearby CN Tower and subsequent damage to the Rogers Centre roof, the Blue Jays postponed Monday’s game against the Kansas City Royals.

The teams will play a traditional doubleheader on Tuesday, with first pitch at 3:07 ET.

Toronto police on Monday warned of falling ice and the tower was closed about an hour later, according to the Toronto Star. The ice created a hole in the Rogers Centre’s retractable roof above right field, and snow was on the playing surface.

A crew worked busily Monday afternoon to repair the largest hole, but leaks persisted, according to those on hand, and the Blue Jays announced the postponement about 90 minutes before the scheduled first pitch and the opening of gates to the public.

The CN Tower, at 1,750 feet, is the tallest freestanding structure in the Western Hemisphere, a bit higher than the former Sears Tower (now Willis Tower) in Chicago. Falling ice created significant hazards for pedestrians in the area Monday. More than 10,000 area residents lost power Sunday due to the ice storm and strong wind gusts.

The postponement continues one of Major League Baseball’s grimmest Aprils for weather. The Boston Red Sox postponed Monday morning’s Patriots Day game against the Baltimore Orioles and the Chicago Cubs called off their Monday night game against the St. Louis Cardinals, running the total to 24 postponements. That’s the most second-most postponements through April this century, trailing the 26 in 2007.

And the month is barely half over.
