MLB suspends Nolan Arenado, Luis Perdomo, two others after Rockies-Padres brawl
Major League Baseball on Friday suspended four players and fined three others for their involvement in Wednesday’s bench-clearing brawl between the San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies.
The players involved have appealed their suspensions.
Rockies All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado and Padres starter Luis Perdomo were each given a five-game suspension for fighting in addition to fines. Also, Rockies’ Gerardo Parra and Padres pitcher Buddy Baumann each received a one-game suspension for fighting during the incident.
Unless appealed, the suspensions of Perdomo, Arenado and Parra are scheduled to be effective tonight. The suspension of Baumann, who has since been optioned to Class AAA El Paso, will be effective upon his return.
Padres catcher A.J. Ellis, infielder Freddy Galvis and Rockies pitcher German Márquez were fined.
The incident occurred In the third inning when Arenado took exception to a pitch that buzzed behind him from Perdomo and immediately charged the mound.
Arenado and Perdomo exchanged punches and were ejected, as were Ellis, Parra and Marquez.
The incident may have been brewing for some time. In their previous seven matchups this season, six batters between the two rivals have been plunked. It may have boiled over when Padres center fielder Manuel Margot was placed on the disabled list after he was hit in the ribs on Tuesday.
