US imposes toughest sanctions yet to END North Korea’s nuclear ambitions:- The bill passed by Congress also honours US student Otto Warmbier who died following his detention by Kim Jong-un’s regime.
Republican representative Kevin McCarthy said: ”I do want it noted that the North Korean sanction legislation — we have changed the name.
“We are going to honour Otto Warmbier who was brutalised and tortured by the Kim regime.”
The new sanctions will see the US-based accounts of companies and financial institutions who deal with the volatile dictatorship frozen.
The latest sanctions passed by 415-2 votes and add to continued international pressure for North Korea to end its nuclear ambitions.
The vote follows two unanimously-adopted sanctions resolutions design to decimate the hermit kingdom’s £2.28billion exports and slash its oil imports.
The sanction are designed at ending the countries ability to continue its aggressive programme developing nuclear warheads and intercontinental ballistic missiles.
Mr Warmbier was arrested as he was waiting to leave the hermit kingdom that he visited as part of a tour group.
The University of Virginia student was later jailed after a short show trial for attempting to steal a propaganda poster from his hotel.
He was sentenced to 15 years of hard labour but released after just 17 months and returned to the US in a coma.
The news comes the day after the US, Japan and South Korean began a two-day training drill to prepare their militaries in response to North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats.
The drill is being carried out by the allies near the border of the rogue state, in Japanese and South Korea waters.
A Security Consultative Meeting agreement last year has seen similar exercises carried out every few months.
Japan warned the threat posed by Kim Jong-un’s rogue state is “critical and imminent”.
