Eastern Equine Encephalitis in Oswego County, N.Y, more West Nile cases:- According to the Equine Disease Communications Center website, New York is reporting a case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis and more cases of West Nile Virus.

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets confirmed a case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in Oswego County. The horse was euthanized.

EEE causes inflammation of the brain tissue and has a significantly higher risk of death in horses than West Nile Virus infection. EEE infections in horses are not a significant risk factor for human infection because horses (like humans) are considered to be “dead-end” hosts for the mosquito-borne virus.
Four new cases of equine West Nile virus were also reported in New York. One horse from St. Lawrence County was not vaccinated for the disease but was still alive.
Three more horses from Cayuga County, Erie County, and St. Lawrence County were euthanized. Two of the three were not vaccinated and one had been vaccinated but not enough time had elapsed for the vaccination to be protective.
West Nile virus is a viral disease that affects horses’ neurological system. The disease is transmitted by mosquito bite. The viruses cycle between birds and mosquitoes with horses and humans being incidental hosts.
