Organizations quick to react to Cam Newton’s sexist comments:-Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton didn’t apologize to the female reporter after what many viewed as a sexist response to a question at a news conference on Wednesday, according a statement the journalist released through the Pro Football Writers of America.
Jourdan Rodrigue, a Panthers beat reporter for The Charlotte Observer, asked Newton about receiver Devin Funchess’ ability to get open down the field. Newton’s response: “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes.”
“This afternoon, I did my job as an NFL beat writer and asked Cam Newton a question about one of his receivers,” Rodrigue said in the statement. “I was dismayed by his response, which not only belittled me but countless other women before me and beside me who work in similar jobs. I sought Mr. Newton out as he left the locker room a few minutes later. He did not apologize for his comments.”
Newton’s comments, which he mixed in with laughter before he answered the question, drew a strong rebuke from several sports news media organizations — including the Associated Press Sports Editors and the Association for Women in Sports Media — and the NFL in the hours that followed.
“The comments are just plain wrong and disrespectful to the exceptional female reporters and all journalists who cover our league,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in the statement to USA TODAY Sports. “They do not reflect the thinking of the league.”
