White House silent on producing Ivanka Trump’s products in US

A White House spokeswoman on Sunday declined to say if a messaging campaign to highlight American-made products would be used to bring production for first daughter Ivanka Trump’s clothing line to the U.S.

“We’ll get back to you on that,” the spokeswoman said in response to a question, according to reporter traveling with President Trump.

The question came as the White House announced a three-week messaging campaign promoting products made in the U.S. ahead of the Senate’s push to reform the tax code.

A report by The Washington Post Friday found that products in Ivanka Trump’s clothing lines are made abroad exclusively and then shipped to the U.S. The clothing and accessories are largely made in factories in countries such as India, Bangladesh and China.

Abigail Klem, the president of Ivanka Trump’s brand, told The Post that the company is exploring ways to move some production to the U.S., but “to do it at a large scale is currently not possible.”

Ivanka Trump is currently serving as an unpaid adviser to her father in the White House.

Her clothing line has come under scrutiny before. Three men were arrested in China while investigating a factory where the first daughter’s shoes were being produced and found that workers were subject to excessive overtime and a salary below the minimum wage. The men were later released.

She will also have to testify in a dispute with an Italian shoemaker, who is accusing her of copying a shoe design.

Social media users mocked the White House’s “Made in America” themed week for not being able to include Ivanka Trump’s products.
