Amazon sets date for Prime Day, with Alexa tease

Welcome back, Prime Day.

Amazon confirmed it will roll out its summer shopping event with deals starting July 10, and continuing through July 11.

In a statement, Amazon is promising more deals, more time to shop (30 hours instead of 24 hours), and a tighter partnership with smaller businesses, which will be responsible for nearly 40% of the lightning deals available during Prime Day.

“Our members love Prime Day and we have been thrilled by the response over the last two years,” said Greg Greeley, vice president of Amazon Prime, in a statement.

Amazon started Prime Day in 2015 as a way to reward subscribers of its Amazon Prime service. The services costs $100 a year, and includes free shipping on most items, as well as access to Amazon Video and other entertainment options.

Prime Day is a big sales generator for Amazon. In 2015, Amazon said its inaugural Prime Day netted better sales than the previous year’s Black Friday.

Amazon says this year’s Prime Day will also include more sales tied to Alexa, the digital voice assistant powering its popular Echo home speakers.

The retailer is rolling out some deals starting now, ahead of Prime Day. They include discounts on Amazon Music Unlimited and Kindle Unlimited, its digital book subscription.
