The UK Just Cancelled Donald Trump State Visit:- The planned visit to the United Kingdom by President Donald Trump has been cancelled for the foreseeable future. The news came via the Queen’s Speech, an event held when a new government enters Parliament.
The Queen’s address, which marks the opening of the new parliament, is usually dictated by the incoming administration and often includes details such as planned state visits. However, this year’s speech only made reference to an upcoming visit by members of the Spanish royal family.
This news comes after reports emerged that Trump was re-thinking his decision to visit the UK, supposedly because he didn’t want to face the huge protests against him that would have erupted in major towns and cities.
The President reportedly told Prime Minister Theresa May that he did not want to come if people wouldn’t welcome his visit in a phone call a few weeks ago.
Prime Minister May offered the President an invitation to visit just one week after his inauguration. Many in the UK saw this as a weak and cynical attempt to curry favor with the new President by lavishing him in luxury, meetings with the Royal Family and rides in the Royal carriage.
Due to the imminent Brexit negotiations, which will see the UK begin the process of leaving the European Union, Britain is looking to strengthen its ties abroad. They saw Trump as a good way of re-igniting the “special relationship” between the two countries that suffered somewhat under former President Obama.
Unluckily for the British, they underestimated Trump’s tendency to change his mind.
A spokesman for the British Government said that the invitation was still on the table, but no timeframe had been agreed.
The British Government has received calls from many public figures and petitions to cancel Trump’s visit. The President’s casual racist, sexist and Islamophobic comments went down very badly across the pond.
The UK has been in turmoil for the last few weeks. A shock election result ruined the Conservative Party’s majority and created a political crisis. Then two terrorist attacks and a deadly fire in a tower block that has claimed the lives of more than 79 people have rocked the nation.
