Suspect in Florida homicides given $750,000 bond:- A woman accused of being accessory to a double homicide was given a $750,000 bond at her first court appearance Thursday, but she is unlikely to be released any time soon.
Mary Craig Rice, 37, appeared before Judge Jose A. Giraud on Thursday afternoon, facing the Santa Rosa County charge of accessory after the fact to murder for her alleged role in last week’s Milton slayings of Jacqueline Jeanette Moore and Alicia Ann Greer — the first of four women Rice and her partner, William "Billy" Boyette Jr., are accused of killing over an eight-day period.
If Rice is able to post the bond, she would still not be released into the community.
Escambia County authorities have a hold placed on Rice, meaning that if she made bond in Santa Rosa, she would be transferred to Escambia’s custody to face a charge of first-degree murder in the slaying of Kayla Crocker on Feb. 6.
Baldwin County, Ala., also had made a motion to begin extraditing Rice to their custody for her warrant on capital murder for the killing of Peggy Broz on Feb. 3 in Lillian, Ala. Baldwin County's efforts were stymied when Rice waived her extradition and agreed to go to Florida, said Baldwin County District Attorney Robert Wilters.
Authorities from the three counties in Florida and Alabama have yet to discuss the timeline of Rice's court proceedings to determine which of the three jurisdiction's courts she'll face first.
Boyette, Rice's alleged accomplice, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Tuesday in a motel room in West Point, Ga., after a police standoff. The pair is accused of an eight-day crime spree in which they allegedly murdered four women, two of them for their vehicles while they were on the run from police.
The vehicle belonging to Crocker was spotted by a community member Tuesday outside the Georgia motel, which led law enforcement to surround the room.
Authorities have said Rice spoke with police and state attorney representatives after her surrender Tuesday night, but none of the agencies revealed any further details about her involvement in the crime spree while the investigation continues.
Rice’s arraignment date has been set for March 3 at 9 a.m.
