This is how much we spent on apps last year

We spent a whole lot of time — and money — using apps in 2016.

The market research company App Annie just surveyed the app landscape, and says we spent 900 billion hours using apps. That’s 150 billion more than the prior year, and constitutes a record.

“This is both a combination of more people using smartphones globally and users spending greater amounts of time on them as more and more functions migrate to mobile (banking, video streaming, dating, etc.),” says AppAnnie’s senior vice-president Danielle Levitas.

And we downloaded some 90 billion apps, on both the Apple iTunes app store and Google Play, vs. 77 billion in 2015.

That’s a lot of Uber trips, CandyCrush games and WhatsApp messages.

The folks who make apps made a lot of money. Publishers picked up nearly $89 billion in revenue from downloads, in-app purchases and advertising. Google and Apple profited as well, keeping some $15 billion in commissions from the app revenues.

The $89 billion figure will double by 2020 to $189 billion, says the report.

The bulk of the 2016 money generated went to games: some 75% of revenue on IOS and 90% on Google Play, with the smash hit Pokemon Go picking up the lion’s share of it.

The top app downloads of the year were the tried and true: Facebook, What’sApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram and Snapchat.

However, when it comes to revenue generated, the top 5 apps were Spotify, Line, Netflix, Tinder and HBO Now.

Finally, App Annie says we open up over 30 apps monthly. “More and more of people’s lives are being integrated into smartphones (e.g. shopping, banking, paying, dating, music streaming, communication, ride-sharing, etc),” notes Levitas. “As a result, people are using more apps each month to complement their daily activities.

In writing this piece, I decided to open my iPhone and see how many of my apps get opened monthly and come to 25, with a handful that get daily usage.
