The video of Oklahoma RB Joe Mixon punching a female student is now public:- The video of Oklahoma Sooners running back Joe Mixon punching a female student at a restaurant near the school’s Norman campus in 2014 was released to the public at his request Friday. Mixon asked for the video’s release after the city faced a suit from the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters.
The Oklahoma Supreme Court, in a ruling earlier this month, gave the city of Norman a Dec. 26 deadline to either make the video public or file an appeal, according to ESPN.com. Mixon’s attorneys said the player requested the video’s release before the deadline.
Mixon is depicted in two camera angles on that July night in 2014 approaching Amelia Molitor at a table at Pickleman’s restaurant. After a few words are exchanged, Molitor pushes Mixon, then slaps his neck. Mixon then punches Molitor, whose head hits the table as she falls to the ground.
Mixon was charged with a misdemeanor but agreed to a plea deal, receiving one year of probation with cognitive behavior counseling and 100 hours of community service. He was also suspended by the team for the 2014 season. Mixon apologized last month, claiming that racial slurs were hurled at him before he was slapped. Molitor sued Mixon for negligence, willful and wanton misconduct, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The latter claim remains but the first two were thrown out by a judge last month.
The University of Oklahoma released a statement Friday.
“University officials were made aware of the content of the video prior to taking action with respect to Joe Mixon. Based on that information, the university immediately suspended and removed Mr. Mixon from the football team for one year, during which high standards of conduct were expected and maintained. It was made clear to Mr. Mixon at the time of his suspension that violence against women will not go unpunished at the university. Coach [Bob] Stoops has been proactive in presenting training for his team aimed at preventing such behavior in the future. Sensitivity training in the area of violence has been intensified and best practices will continue to be implemented. Mr. Mixon has apologized for his actions and the university hopes that it is an indication that he has learned from his mistakes. We are an educational institution where we hope young people will learn from their mistakes and chart a better future course.”
Mixon, 20, amassed 1,632 total yards and 13 touchdowns this season for the Big 12 champions. He is considered the 24th-best prospect eligible for the 2017 NFL draft by Pro Football Focus, which deems him “a complete all-around running back . . . Every time he touches the ball he’s a threat to turn it into a huge play.”
