Biden says he would have been eaten alive if he ran against Trump in 2016:- Vice President Joe Biden said Sunday that Donald Trump ran “the most vicious campaign” he ever saw and likely would have himself been “eaten alive” if he’d decided to run for president in 2016.
Biden said Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton had offered many good ideas during his campaign but that they “got drowned out” by Trump’s constant insults and a news cycle that focused on the President-elect’s “boorish behavior.”
“It got drowned out by the most vicious campaign, the craziest campaign, I’ve ever witnessed,” Biden said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
But Biden, who had considered running for his party’s nomination in 2016, refused to say whether he felt he would have been a better candidate than Clinton.
“Oh, I don’t know,” Biden said. “They probably would have eaten me alive.”
“And I really mean that. I mean, I don’t know. Right?” Biden added. “I learned how to become popular. Now that you’re not running for president, boom, man, you’re the most popular guy out there.
But he again wouldn’t rule out running for President in 2020 — an act he’s wavered on publicly in recent days.
“Age could be very much an issue, and it may not be. It depends on the state of my health and the health of whomever is running,” Biden said of a prospective bid in four years, when he’d be 78.
“But, look … four years is a lifetime in American politics. And I think that nominees are determined by their parties based mostly on what skill set is most needed at that time. And who knows where we’re going to be two years from now when people really start looking seriously at what they are going to do,” he said.
In the meanwhile, Biden said he’d be interested in working with academia on cancer research — a core focus of his since his son Beau Biden succumbed to brain cancer a little more than a year ago.
“Is there going to be a Biden center somewhere?” CNN’s Jake Tapper asked.
“Yes, I think so,” Biden responded. “I think I’m going to be able to be in a position. I’m talking to some universities who want me to become engaged, who are prepared to give me a platform to have serious staff people of consequence.”
