Dems eye Elizabeth Warren as voice of opposition to prez Donald Trump:- Bay State U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren said yesterday she’s looking to move past her differences with President-elect Donald Trump, but party leaders say she has a chance to emerge as the face of Democratic opposition to his policies, including Supreme Court nominations.
“It’s no secret that I didn’t want to see Donald Trump win yesterday,” said Warren — who frequently traded insults with Trump in speeches and Twitter posts. But, her statement said, “President-elect Trump promised to rebuild our economy for working people, and I offer to put aside our differences and work with him on that task.”
Former Democratic Nat-ional Committee Chairman Steve Grossman told the Herald the Democratic Party has no stronger voice than Warren, and taking on Trump and a GOP-controlled Congress could raise her profile nationally — making her a likely 2020 presidential prospect.
“The leadership role she plays over the next two years — not picking every fight, picking battles judiciously — that, in many, many ways will validate the confidence in her and her brand of leadership that residents of the commonwealth already have,” Grossman said.
Former Massachusetts Democratic Party Chairman John Walsh said he is glad Warren is reaching out to Trump, but noted Trump has opposed consumer protection regulations Warren has pushed for, and predicted the senator would be a merciless opponent if she disagrees with him.
“When the president does things that she thinks will be hurtful, she’ll fight like hell,” Walsh said.
And while the Democrats are at a low ebb of influence with no control of Congress, Walsh said Warren would avoid being marginalized.
“She’s not worried about playing the insider game, who everybody likes, who you have to go to a party with,” Walsh said. “You can’t marginalize someone in those circumstances.”
David A. Hopkins, an assistant professor of political science at Boston College, said, “My guess is she will position herself to be one of the more aggressive opponents of Trump on that issue as well as others.”
Warren could lead filibuster attempts against any Supreme Court nominees.
“There will be a demand within the party for that and she’ll be likely to play that role,” Hopkins said. “A lot of Democrats will be trying to figure out in the next four years who’s in charge of the party — the Clinton years are over, the Obama years are over, who are the next people to speak for the party?”
