It’s a problem, so many of us face, and Google is exploiting it in a current TV commercial being shown on the 2016 Olympics. For Google, it’s a not-too-subtle pitch to try out the Google Photos app, one of several solutions to the problem.On the weekend extended #TalkingTech podcast, we explore the Google Photos app as one solution, and offer more as well.
So say you have an iPhone or iPad with just 16 GB of memory. Throw on some apps, archive text messages, take some photos and videos and in no time, you’re full.You can do a backup to a hard drive, delete like crazy, or try one of these apps and devices to fix the problem.Many Android users don’t have these problems because many phones come with external memory slots, letting you backup photos to cards. The iPhone doesn’t, although the next edition, to be announced in September, is expected to start with double the memory, at 32 GB, making the issue less severe for new consumers.
Photographer Erin Manning, one of our #TalkingTech panelists this week, often teaches photography on cruise ships, where Internet access is hard and expensive to come by. A physical solution “is a great answer for many of the passengers, who won’t have access to a cloud service,” she says.But many of us are on land, and can connect easily, so let’s look at the cloud solutions first.
The app, first introduced in 2015, quickly attracted more than 200 million monthly users, thanks to its delicious offer — unlimited backup and automatic transfers from your smartphone to every image and video taken. Google also has an automatic upload feature from your computer as well. The catch is that images have their resolution lowered, but Google says they’re still usable for making big prints. (Our tests have borne that out.) Google Photos is the easiest, most affordable option for iPhone users. The only issue is finding your photos afterwards, which can get lost in a sea of images — not unlike the iPhone Camera Roll. Pro-tip: try to go and tag a few from each shoot with info, to make them easier to search for.
iCloud. Apple’s answer to Google Photos is iCloud Photo Sharing, but unlike Google, you only get 5 gigabytes of storage for free. For about $12 a year, you can get 50 GB storage, or $36 for 200 GB. Dropbox offers 2 GB of storage for free, or $99 yearly for 1 terabyte of storage, while Microsoft’s OneDrive starts with 5 GB of free storage, or $24 yearly for 500 GB.
Amazon Prime. The E-tailer offers free photo backup for members of its $99.99 yearly shipping/entertainment service. A smartphone app is available to transfer photos from the phone to Amazon’s cloud.Portable USB drives that work with the iPhone.You know those little thumb drives we all put into our computers to move files around? Now they have ones that can fit right into an iPhone or iPad as well, in the Lightning charging port, and go back and forth between the phone and computer.
I tested the Sandisk iXpand this week and love it. The drive isn’t cheap. It starts at around $40 for 16 GB of storage $60 for 64 GB). Then again, it’s a lot cheaper than having to buy a new phone because you ran out of room.
