Passenger Reports Gunshots Hitting an Olympic Media Bus in Rio: A media bus at the Olympics in Rio was vandalized on Tuesday night, possibly by gunfire, witnesses claim.
USA Today reports that a passenger heard gunshots striking one of the buses used to transport media to and from Olympic events.
The bus was reportedly returning from the women’s basketball venue in Deodoro, when passengers said that they heard what sounded like gunshots, as two windows of the bus shattered.
Authorities, however, said that the sound was rocks being thrown at the bus and a Turkish volunteer had a minor injury, USA Today reports.
According to Reuters, two people on the bus suffered lacerations. It’s unclear if either of those passengers was the Turkish volunteer.
In a statement obtained by USA Today, Rio 2016 officials described the situation, saying that the driver did hear a noise on the bus, but was under the impression that someone had dropped their photography equipment. When checking his rear-view mirror, he noticed the passengers had dropped to the ground, but continued to drive until he saw police.
The statement continues, explaining that the driver then saw the broken windows, but the glass didn’t immediately shatter, giving way only as he continued down the road, where he was followed by a police escort.
However, some passenger insist it was gunshots that were fired, including retired U.S. Air Force Captain Sherryl “Lee” Michaelson.
“Two shots. It was very quick – pop, pop,” she told USA Today, adding that it happened around 8:15 p.m. local time. “The driver said, ‘Don’t worry. It’s a rock, it’s a rock. There is no way that could have been a rock.”
Michaelson added that after the incident, the bus pulled back into the media center and let police on to investigate.
