There was one such name in our industry, a woman who has inspired many and she was Jean Carson. She was an amazing American actress who had given this industry some of the best examples of classic films and onscreen performance

Jean Carson was born on 28th February in 1923, in Charleston in West Virginia. Her parents Alexander W. Carson and Sadie named her Jean Carson. She was attracted to the amazing world of show business when she was the little child playing ‘Bad Little Indian Girl’. When she was just 12 years of age she got her first payment of $5 as an actor. She was offered a small part in a production of Carmen that traveled through her hometown of Charleston, West Virginia. When she was in her high school, her craze and passion for acting grew much stronger. In her school, she was voted as ‘the girl most likely to succeed as an actress’. Then one day she talked to her mother and told her that Jean Carson is going to be on a Broadway. She attended Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. And finally, after graduating she achieved the success she had dreamt for.

When Jean Carson started off with her acting career, some of her early works included some theatrical work like acting in the production of Kanawha Players. In the year 1958, she made her Broadway debut in George S. Kaufman's Bravo.  Some of her other Broadway works included acting in Anniversary Waltz with Macdonald Carey, Two Blind Mice with Melvyn Douglas, and Bird Cage and this performance of hers garnered her a Tony Award nomination.


Jean Carson also played many astonishing and amazing roles on the television as well. Some of her best roles on the TV series included Studio One, NBC Presents, The Twilight Zone as Paula in "A Most Unusual Camera", a part which was written especially for her by Rod Serling and The Ford Theatre Hour. Then she was seen making various guest appearances on different TV series during the 1950s. In 1958, she appeared as Paula in Peter Gunn, then 1959 she was seen making an appearance in a regular role on The Betty Hutton Show. Carson described Hutton as a "foul-mouthed old biddy" and said that was the only acting experience she did not enjoy. In the year 1962, she had a major role and a great part to play as Naomi in Andy Griffith Show. One of her most popular roles was playing the character of Daphne who was one of the Fun Girls; this role gave her the fame of her life time. For this role, she appeared with Joyce Jameson on recruiting basis from 1962-1965. Daphne was a notorious flirt who greeted her objects of affection with a throaty "Hello Doll". 

Jean Carson had also acted in a few films and gave some of her brilliant performances. In 1955 she had appeared in The Phenix City Story, and then in 1958 she was seen acting in the film titled I Married a Monster from the Outer Space. Carson felt she was typecast by some of these roles and said "I'm what you call a 'second woman' or 'second tomato.' They never get the man.” In the year 1968, she received a fourth billing and earned it for Peter Sellers comedy film The Party, and till date that was one of her best films. Her last film role was 1977's Fun with Dick and Jane.

Jean Carson Personal Life 


During the 1970s Jean Carson had been suffering from a severe drinking addiction and a problem which had barred her acting career for a while. She took retirement from acting in the 1980s. After some time she became sober. She associated herself with The Andy Griffith Show for many years, attending cast performances, conventions, and other meetings and writing back to fans personally until she suffered a severe stroke which left her incapacitated in September 2005. Jean Carson got married to Leonard Smith Jr. who was known to be the assistant manager at the Roxy TheatreIn the year of 2005, On November 2nd unfortunately, she died when she was 82 years of age. The cause of her death was said to be the complication of the stroke.
