Dixie Carter Biography
Our industry has seen so many actors and entertainers over ages. But unfortunately, we do not know the story of each one of them. Here we are witnessing the story of some of the greatest actors of our industry who have worked so hard to self-establish themselves making their own individual identity. This is especially for those women in the golden era who were able to compete with the men and stand equal to them in position. We are grateful to that bunch we had in our societies who have inspired us to powerful and be irreplaceable. There was one such beautifully bold woman in our industry named Dixie Carter. She was an astonishing actress and had appeared in numerous Broadway shows, films, and television as well. She had never failed to entertain us with her work.

Dixie Carter Early Life | Academy Specifics and Family Background

Dixie Carter was born on 25th May 1939 in McLemoresville in Tennessee. Her parents Esther Virginia and Halbert Leroy Carter named her as Dixie Virginia Carter. She had spent her childhood years being brought up in Memphis. She got herself enrolled in the University of Memphis and Rhodes College. When she was in her college she was an active member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. In the year 1959, she took part in the Miss Tennessee pageant. She got the position of the first runner up to Mickie Weyland. She had won the Miss Volunteer beauty pageant at the University of Tennessee in the same year.

Dixie Carter Career | Theatre World Award | Best Television Program Designing Woman

It was in the year 1960 when Dixie Carter made her professional stage debut with appearing on the Memphis production of Carousel. In the year 1963, she moved to New York City and was cast in the Shakespeare’s production of The Winter’s Tale. From the years 1967-1974, Dixie Carter took a brief leap from the acting career; it was because she wanted to raise her two daughters well without neglecting their childhood. Then in 1974, she returned back to the craft when she took the role of Dorian Cramer on the show named One Life to Live. The actress cast for this role earlier was Nancy Pinkerton and she was on maternity leave that is why Carter was able to fill in place of her.  She subsequently was cast in the role of Assistant D.A. Olivia Brandeis Henderson on the soap opera The Edge of Night, on which she appeared from 1974 to 1976. Many people advised her that doing this role for a daytime soap might affect her career in a negative way. She moved from New York to Los Angeles to pursue prime time television roles. She had also won the Theatre World Award for Jesse and the Bandit Queen

Dixie Carter had done many television series like her role as Aunt Marion in Out of the Blue, as April Baxter in On Our Own, as the first Maggie McKinney Drummond, Phillip Drummond's second wife in Different Strokes, playing the role of a KGB Spy in The Greatest American Hero and in the year 1982 as the stuck-up and conniving Carlotta Beck on Filthy Rich. Her role and her performance in Filthy Rich gave her an opportunity of her lifetime which gained her a lot of recognition for the role of sharp-tongued liberal interior decorator Julia Sugarbaker in the 1986–1993 in a television program Designing Women, set in Atlanta. Dixie Carter previous show was directed by Linda Bloodworth Thomason, and she also had created the Designing Women. The director said that before she even had the idea to wand about what the show would be, she knew that she would definitely star Carter in the show co starring Delta Burke, Annie Potts, and Jean Smart. After much persuasion from creators Linda Bloodworth-Thomason and her husband, Harry Thomason, Hal Holbrook, Carter's real-life husband, had a recurring role as attorney Reese Watson. Carter’s daughters namely Ginna and Mary Dixie Carter we also saw making a guest appearance on the show as Julia’s nieces named Jennifer and Camilla in the episode titled The Naked Truth in 1989. In the year 1997, Dixie Carter was starred as Maria Callas in a Broadway show of Terrence McNally titled Master Class. She had played that role from January to June. Dixie Carter had also been known for playing the role of a strong minded southern woman Necile in Mike Young Productions' direct-to-video 2000 cartoon feature The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus. This was that role of her life for which she had gained the best popularity and In that, Dixie Carter portrayed the role of a lawyer for the first time since she played Brandy Henderson on The Edge of Night. She had also been cast for acting in a show named Ladies Man, although the show was short lived from 1999-2000. In the year 2004, Dixie Carter appeared as a guest on the show Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. In that show, she appeared playing a defense attorney named Denise Brockmorton in that episode in which she defended the paranoid mother of two children who had manipulated her older son to kill the younger son, after breaking her home rules.

In the year 2006, she was interviewed for the feature length documentary entitled That Guy: The Legacy of Dub Taylor which received support from Taylor's family and many of Dub's previous coworkers, including Bill Cosby, Peter Fonda, Don Collier, Cheryl Rogers-Barnett, and many others.
