Ann Carter Biography

There are some great examples or we can call them as epitomes of acting in our industry. A very few of them had started at a very early age in their lives and had got the level of fame which is still not conquered by many established actors till date. They had struggled hard but with their skills and talent intact nothing had ever been impossible for them to conquer. They have given us the inspiration to work harder and if we believe in ourselves then nothing is impossible. We know one such name and that is Ann Carter, a young astonishing actress who has given us a lot to look up on. She had done so much in her life and had never failed in any way to inspire or entertain us.

Ann Carter Early Life and Career | Best Movies

Ann Carter was born on June 16th in 1936, in Syracuse, New York. Her mother Nancy took Ann along with her when she was just 3 years sold to Palm Springs in California. Her mother thought that it was for the best of Nancy’s health. Her father Bert Carter was an executive with the Dodge division of Chrysler Corporation.  He used to travel back and forth between California and Detroit (it was where he was working for Chrysler Corporation). For a short, while Ann Carter and her mother used to live with her maternal Aunt Stelle and Uncle Jack in Glendale California, then they moved  "to a place near Olympic and Robertson in West Los Angeles, with her father there again part-time."  Her mother always had a keen interest in doing and working for theater and become a theater actress one day, but she was not allowed by her father to do so. According to her mother, Ann was discovered by acting fraternity when she was just 4. Ann Carter recalled that it was when they were traveling in Los Angeles riding on the bus; Ann explained that “someone from 20th Century-Fox saw me and told my mom that I should be introduced to producer-director Herbert Brenon. I was and, through Mr. Brenon, I got to try out for a one-line part in Fox's Last of the Duanes... – and I got the part!”

It was some 60 years later when Ann Carter was asked about her work in Last of Duanes, she said that she does not recall much as it was shot in April 1941, but Ann Carter said that her mother once told her that she was much focused on that project of hers. In 1942 she was cast for a fantasy film named I Married a witch, she played the character of Veronica Lake’s young daughter. That film made a great imprint on her. A scene she remembers clearly, which later "ended up on the cutting room floor," Ann Carter flew down a staircase on a broomstick, specially fitted with a little seat crafted specifically for her. She also recalled a thing about makeup artists that they were always keen to make her look exactly like Veronica Lake doing her Peek-a-Boo hairstyle

Ann Carter Filmography | Most Substantial Role | Award for the Best Juvenile Actor

In 1944 Ann Carter most substantial role on the screen dropped out on the big screen for the film named The Curse of the Cat People in which she played the character of Amy Reed. She played the role o a lonely imaginative child who is unable to relate to the other children of her age like her schoolmates. According to the critics of those times, this role of her life made her a star and got her the fame she had deserved. Ann Carter said that she found shooting for that film interesting because of the sets of the film which were shot on a set at RKO. She also recalls of her mother saying “for every movie, she would first talk about the whole picture, the whole idea, the whole plot, so that I understood so that I was not just some little parrot reciting lines”. This was a fact that she was always surrounded by a lot of people on the sets and sometimes the sets were intimidating as well but she never feared. Ann Carter worked 33 days working for the film under the direction of two directors namely Gunther von Fritsch and Robert WiseAnn Carter never thought that she could become a star one day or she never even had aspired for it, she always thanked her parents for keeping her grounded and supporting her always. She was schooled on the sets every now and then and she said that it was great for her as it occurred one-on-one and according to her even 15 minutes of one-on-one attention made her learn a lot.

By the time in the year 1947, Ann Carter had appeared in a lot of films but one of her major roles was playing the role of the daughter of Humphery Bogart in the film The Two Mrs. Carrols. For her amazing performance in the film, she received an award for the best juvenile actor. Carter cites her scenes with Bogart and co-star Barbara Stanwyck as particular high points during her career.  She said that she and Bogart "got along so well... he was a really nice man; a very warm, nice man." He nicknamed her "Tonsils" when she yawned in his face during a rehearsal. After such good performances in two great films, she did a few small roles in other films and they were uncredited. She had also appeared on many Lux Radio Theatre programs beginning at the age of 11 which included playing the role of Cary Grant's daughter in the radio adaptation of Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House. She also "had a disc jockey show on KFWB for a while."

Ann Carter Post Acting Years | Academy Specifics

Unfortunately, Ann Carter left acting after she was diagnosed with polio which she recalls that she was contracted with it on 4th of July in 1948. It was in the vacation when her parents and some of their friends went on a boat to Catalina Island. She believes that the incubation period of polio – a scourge among children of the time – corresponded to her swimming in contaminated water from the boat. Initially, when taken to a doctor Ann Carter was diagnosed with summer flu, and after a while, she thought she was over with the disease. But it was at the time of the shooting of the film directed by Fred Zinnemann named The Member of the Wedding when the director noticed her leaning to the pot and it was discovered that muscles have gone down on one side of her back. Then an electromyogram was done at the Memorial Hospital in LA and physical therapy and swimming, she was strengthened enough to "carry around a cast and weighed 55 pounds.

After Ann Carter recovered from her injury, she attended college at Occidental College in Los Angeles. Ann Carter paid her fees herself from all that she had earned till date. Once she recalled that "her agent Earl Kramer called while she was in college and wanted her to go on an interview for the movie Not as a Stranger in 1955 and she said she couldn't because she had a final that day."While she was doing graduation at her college she married Crosby Newton on May 23rd in 1957. From the very next year, she started teaching at the high school and junior high spending time as a substitute teacher. She said that she enjoyed teaching at high school and most of all she enjoyed taking drama classes the most. Her parents die in the year 1982, at that time she had no one left in California so to break all the ties she left South California in 1982. At that time she along with her husband decided to relocate to Pacific Northwest. They got settled in the eastern suburbs of Seattle. In Washington, Ann Carter attended a travel school and she became a cruise only travel agent after some time.

Ann Carter had three children with her husband and they had named them Gail, David, and Carol. After a while when her children were married and had the children of their own she got retired and took care of her grandchildren allowing her children and their partners to work. In the month of January I 2005 she was diagnosed with stage 3rd of the deadly disease of ovarian cancer. Ann Carter got her chemo treatment" from Dr. Saul Rivkin at the Swedish Cancer Institute in Seattle, she got through it with help from family and friends. The shooting of the film mostly took place in Millay Bay, Canada. Ann recalls that Ann Carter along with the other cast and crew members stayed at the Empress Hotel in Victoria. She also said that the shooting took place during the war and because everybody had a fear inside after the Japanese attack happened, there were little boats in the harbor outside the Empress Hotel in case if an evacuation was needed. It was a film which showed the war propaganda and it was based on the story of British writer C. S. Forester with a screenplay by the American writer Irwin Lewis. The cast of the film included some names like Sir Cedric Hardwicke and Lillian Gish.

In the year 1943, she was again cast for a war film name The North star starring along with Ann Harding and Anne Baxter. She recalled that she along with her co star from the film name Farley Granger were offered contracts with Goldwyn after the film but they never considered taking the offers as at that time Sam Goldwyn had found Danny Kaye.
