{"id":65431,"date":"2020-04-09T07:31:14","date_gmt":"2020-04-09T07:31:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/?p=65431"},"modified":"2020-04-09T07:31:18","modified_gmt":"2020-04-09T07:31:18","slug":"virus-could-push-half-a-billion-people-into-poverty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/lifestyle\/virus-could-push-half-a-billion-people-into-poverty.html","title":{"rendered":"Virus could push half a billion people into poverty"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The economic fallout from the coronavirus could increase global poverty by as much a half a billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This bleak warning comes from a United Nations (UN) study into the financial and human cost of the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will be the first time that poverty has increased globally in 30 years, according to the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The findings come ahead of key meetings of the World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and G20 finance ministers next week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The United Nations University study was written by experts at King&#8217;s College London and Australian National University (ANU).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The economic crisis is potentially going to be even more severe than the health crisis,&#8221; said Christopher Hoy from ANU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report, which estimates a 400-600 million increase in the number of people in poverty across the globe, says the potential impact of the virus poses a real challenge to the UN Sustainable Development Goal of ending poverty by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/660\/cpsprodpb\/16B17\/production\/_111715929_farmlabourers.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Calls for debt relief for world&#8217;s poorest nations<\/li><li>IMF provides $50bn to fight coronavirus outbreak &#8211; BBC News<\/li><li>Coronavirus- Millions will be left in poverty, World Bank warns &#8211; BBC News<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our findings point towards the importance of a dramatic expansion of social safety nets in developing countries as soon as possible and &#8211; more broadly &#8211; much greater attention to the impact of Covid in developing countries and what the international community can do to help,&#8221; said Professor Andy Sumner of King&#8217;s College London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the time the pandemic is over half of the world&#8217;s population of 7.8 billion people could be living in poverty.
