London Surgeon Says Trump Solution to Knife Crime Is ‘Ridiculous’<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

LONDON \u2014 If anyone had any hope that President Trump would adopt a more conciliatory tone toward Britain before his visit in July, it was dashed on Friday, when he appeared before a National Rifle Association conference in Dallas and took a jab at London\u2019s crime rate.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cKnives, knives, knives, knives,\u201d he said, mimicking a stabbing motion as he defended gun ownership in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n

Saying that Americans\u2019 rights to carry guns were \u201cunder siege,\u201d he said: \u201cI recently read a story that in London, which has unbelievably tough gun laws, a once very prestigious hospital right in the middle is like a war zone for horrible stabbing wounds.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Appearing to link the wave of knife crimes in London to a ban on guns, he added: \u201cThey don\u2019t have guns. They have knives, and instead there\u2019s blood all over the floors of this hospital.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He also drew sharp rebukes in France for using his hand in a gun gesture during the speech to mime how a gunman had killed hostages during a terrorist attack in Paris in 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n

The reaction in Britain was weary humor and bewilderment, with many in the news and on social media questioning where the president got his information.<\/span><\/p>\n

The writer and performer Robert Webb wrote on Twitter: \u201cWell, it\u2019s a beautiful day here in Trump\u2019s war zone. I\u2019ve been to the shop and didn\u2019t get even mildly stabbed. Now we\u2019re nicely stocked up on tinned goods & I won\u2019t have venture out again till Tuesday. Phew!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the BBC, Mr. Trump may have used as inspiration a Radio 4 interview last month with a London trauma surgeon, Dr. Martin P. Griffiths, who said he was treating stabbing victims \u201con a daily basis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He added that some of his military colleagues had described their practice at the institution as similar to that of a military camp in Afghanistan. The interview was picked up by Mail Online.<\/span><\/p>\n

Karim Brohi, a trauma surgeon at the Royal London Hospital and director of London\u2019s major trauma system, said in a statement on Saturday that while knife violence was \u201ca serious issue\u201d in London, \u201cto suggest guns are part of the solution is ridiculous.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He added: \u201cGunshot wounds are at least twice as lethal as knife injuries and more difficult to repair. We are proud of our world-leading service and to serve the people of London.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Knife crime in Britain rose by 21 percent last year, according to figures released in September by the Office for National Statistics, which compiles an authoritative survey of crime in England and Wales.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stabbings in London were at their highest level in six years: At least 38 people in London have died from knife crime so far this year, according to the Metropolitan Police.<\/span><\/p>\n

More than 30,000 Americans were killed by firearms in 2016, according to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Protection.<\/span><\/p>\n

In France, after Mr. Trump said a civilian could have stopped the massacre at the Bataclan concert hall in November 2015 if that person had been armed with a gun, Fran\u00e7ois Hollande, the former French president, said on Twitter that the comments and antics were \u201cshameful\u201d and \u201cobscene,\u201d according to Reuters.<\/span><\/p>\n

The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, also said that Mr. Trump\u2019s portrayal of the attacks was \u201ccontemptuous and unworthy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The American president previously suggested that schoolteachers should get a \u201cbit of a bonus\u201d to carry guns \u2014 a position backed by the N.R.A. But in February, under pressure after a gunman killed 17 people at a school in Florida, he ordered the Justice Department to consider banning so-called bump stocks, which allow semiautomatic guns to fire at nearly the rate of a machine gun.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Trump\u2019s latest remarks came weeks after he accepted Prime Minister Theresa May\u2019s invitation to come to Britain, after canceling an earlier plan to visit.<\/span><\/p>\n

The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan \u2014 who previously faced criticism by Mr. Trump and Donald Trump Jr. over his handling of terrorist attacks in the city \u2014 had warned that the president could face protests if he visited the capital on July 13.<\/span><\/p>\n
