Venezuela’s Maduro threatens ‘armed revolution’ ahead of May 20 election<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro is warning that he\u2019ll take up arms and lead a revolution if a government comes into power that wants to hand the country\u2019s “riches” to \u201cimperialist\u201d forces.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a campaign speech Wednesday, Maduro \u2014 who is hoping to win a new six-year term in a highly questioned May 20 election \u2014 accused his nearest opposition rival, Henri Falc\u00f3n, of wanting to sell the country out to \u201cthe gringos.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf someday a government was in power that intended to hand over [our] riches, I would be the first one to raise the alarm, grab a gun and start an armed revolution with the people, if necessary,\u201d he told a crowd of supporters in Vargas. \u201cI would be the first one to do it, and call the people to arms.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

His opponent, Falc\u00f3n, a one-time government supporter turned dissident, is struggling to attract voters who are wary that going to the polls will legitimize a deeply flawed electoral process. And most of the major opposition groups are calling for an outright boycott of the election.<\/span><\/p>\n

Falc\u00f3n has talked about dollarizing the economy and ramping up foreign investment to overcome a deep economic crisis that features hyperinflation and sporadic food and medicine shortages. Those woes have also generated an exodus, as more than 1 million people have fled the country in recent years.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Maduro said the opposition\u2019s \u201conly offer\u201d is to \u201chand over the country to the gringos and the European oligarchs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Maduro, who has been in power since 2013, has often said he\u2019d resort to violence to defend the \u201cBolivarian Revolution\u201d started by his late predecessor Hugo Ch\u00e1vez.<\/span><\/p>\n

Venezuela is pushing ahead with snap elections as the United States, the European Union and many of its neighbors in the region have said the vote will neither be free nor transparent. In the run-up to the election, the government has sidelined key opposition parties and jailed or disqualified some of its most prominent opponents.<\/span><\/p>\n

Maduro said he didn\u2019t care if the elections were recognized around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t give a damn what Europe says. I don\u2019t give a damn about what Washington says,\u201d he told the crowd. \u201cI only care about what Venezuela\u2019s youth, Venezuela\u2019s women and Venezuela\u2019s workers say. That\u2019s what\u2019s important to me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
