Trump replaces White House lawyer on Russia probe<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Lawyer Emmet Flood, who advised President Bill Clinton in impeachment proceedings, will assist President Donald Trump with Special Counsel Robert Mueller\u2019s investigation into Russia\u2019s role in the 2016 election, replacing Ty Cobb, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said on Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n

The latest lawyer shuffle comes as the question of whether Trump will agree to an interview with Mueller appears to be coming to a head. Washington lawyer John Dowd, who left Trump\u2019s outside legal team over a month ago, said on Tuesday that in March, Mueller had threatened to subpoena Trump\u2019s testimony if he did not talk to investigators.<\/span><\/p>\n

Flood will \u201crepresent the president and the administration against the Russia witch hunt,\u201d Sanders said. \u201cTy Cobb, a friend of the president, who has done a terrific job, will be retiring at the end of the month.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Neither Cobb nor Flood immediately responded to requests for comment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mueller is investigating Russia\u2019s meddling in the 2016 U.S. election, an investigation that includes whether the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow and possible obstruction of justice by Trump, among other things.Russia has denied interfering in the election, despite the conclusions of U.S. intelligence agencies, and Trump has denied there was any collusion between his campaign and Moscow while repeatedly denouncing the investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last year, Flood turned down a post on the White House team that ultimately went to Cobb, Reuters reported in July. He met with Trump in March about assisting the administration with the Russia probe, though the position was unclear, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Flood advised Clinton in impeachment proceedings in the late 1990s brought by the U.S. House of Representatives and tried before the U.S. Senate, where Clinton was acquitted.<\/span><\/p>\n

Flood also spent two years in the White House counsel\u2019s office, where he handled executive privilege-related disputes for President George W. Bush\u2019s administration and congressional investigations and other inquiries. He was a clerk for Associate Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cobb joined the administration in July after resigning from the Washington law firm of Hogan Lovells. In an interview with Reuters in August, he predicted a quick end to the Mueller probe.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d be embarrassed if this is still haunting the White House by Thanksgiving, and worse if it\u2019s still haunting him by year end,\u201d Cobb told Reuters at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n

He also took a cooperative approach to Mueller\u2019s requests.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump has since appeared increasingly frustrated with the investigation. Last month, Trump brought former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani onto his outside legal team, and said the former federal prosecutor wanted to resolve the matter quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to a Washington Post reporter\u2019s Twitter Post on Wednesday, Giuliani said any interview of the president by Mueller would be maximum \u201ctwo to three hours around a narrow set of questions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Separately, Giuliani told Bloomberg News that the legal team \u201cwould be inclined\u201d to allow the interview, but said if Mueller already believed former FBI director James Comey\u2019s version of events, then it would be leading Trump \u201cinto the lion\u2019s den.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Later on Fox News, Giuliani said that John Dowd, who quit as Trump\u2019s attorney in March, \u201chad the right instincts about this, you\u2019re going to get him to testify over my dead body, because you\u2019re going to try to trap him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going to have my client be treated worse than Bill Clinton,\u201d Giuliani said, adding that Trump had fired FBI Director James Comey \u201cbecause Comey would not, among other things, say that he wasn\u2019t a target of the investigation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Giuliani said the founding fathers wanted the president to be immune from criminal prosecution while in office so there would be no distractions from his role. \u201cYou can\u2019t possibly feel as a citizen of the world that his negotiations with North Korea aren\u2019t much more significant than this totally garbage investigation,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Joshua Stueve, a spokesman for Mueller, declined to comment on the reports.<\/span><\/p>\n

Besides Giuliani, former federal prosecutors Martin Raskin and Jane Serene Raskin also just joined Trump\u2019s outside legal team, which has recently been led by lawyer Jay Sekulow.<\/span><\/p>\n
