{"id":64502,"date":"2018-05-01T06:19:05","date_gmt":"2018-05-01T06:19:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/?p=64502"},"modified":"2018-05-01T06:19:05","modified_gmt":"2018-05-01T06:19:05","slug":"scientists-miserable-worlds-oldest-known-spider-dies-australia-43-wasp-sting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/world-news\/scientists-miserable-worlds-oldest-known-spider-dies-australia-43-wasp-sting.html","title":{"rendered":"Scientists &#8216;miserable&#8217; after world&#8217;s oldest-known spider dies in Australia at 43 from a wasp sting"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;color: #000000\">Scientists &#8216;miserable&#8217; after world&#8217;s oldest-known spider dies in Australia at 43 from a wasp sting<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Scientists in Australia say they are heartbroken after the world\u2019s oldest-known spider has died \u2014 from a wasp sting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">The antique arachnid, known as Number 16, passed away at 43, beating the previous record-holder, a Mexican tarantula that met its maker at age 28, according to a study published in the Pacific Conservation Biology Journal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">\u201cWe\u2019re really miserable about it,\u201d Leanda Mason, the study\u2019s lead scientist told England\u2019s Daily Telegraph newspaper. \u201cWe were hoping she could have made it to 50 years old.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">The female Gaius Villosus, or trapdoor spider, had been under observation in the wild since its birth in 1974, the paper reported, part of research that is the life\u2019s work of Barbara York Main, now 88, who first studied Number 16 shortly after its birth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">\u201cTo our knowledge this is the oldest spider ever recorded and her significant life has allowed us to further investigate the trapdoor spider\u2019s behaviour and popular dynamics,\u201d said Mason, a student of Main, in a statement from Curtin University in Western Australia where the research was based.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">\u201cThrough Barbara\u2019s detailed research,\u201d Mason added, \u201cwe were able to determine that the extensive life span of the trapdoor spider is due to their life-history traits, including how they live in uncleared, native bushland, their sedentary nature and low metabolisms.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Trapdoor spiders usually live between five to 20 years, with females staying in or near their burrows, while males wander around searching for females to mate with. They are not considered to be a major threat to humans, although a bite can cause pain and swelling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 14pt;color: #000000\">Number 16 was monitored in the wild, Agence France-Presse reported.
