Dillon Danis channels friend Conor McGregor ahead of pro MMA debut at Bellator 198<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Bellator newcomer Dillon Danis\u2019 mask of confidence shows no signs of stress fractures.<\/span><\/p>\n

The jiu-jitsu champ held court at today\u2019s press conference for Bellator 198, which marks his debut as a professional MMA fighter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Danis (0-0 MMA, 0-0 BMMA), a training partner of former UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, nonchalantly reaffirmed a tweet earlier in which he said he\u2019d own Bellator after one fight.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bellator CEO Scott Coker tried not to take the young upstart too seriously.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI love it all,\u201d Coker said. \u201cIt\u2019s all good.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll be co-owners,\u201d replied Danis. \u201cIt\u2019s OK.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Just three weeks ago, the 24-year-old Danis showed up at a New York jail to bail out McGregor after a bus rampage. He said it only served to focus his mind for the task at hand against fellow Bellator newcomer Kyle Walker.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI just know what I have to do, so all the outside noise, it\u2019s easier to find calmness in it,\u201d Danis said. \u201cSo I feel 100 percent focused on this fight. I know what needs to be done, and nothing will change it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A lot of MMA observers will watch Danis just to see if his action lives up to his words, or maybe more accurately, whether he\u2019ll eat the latter. Like it or not, his pro debut is a referendum on whether McGregor\u2019s touch is truly golden. \u201cThe Notorious’\u201d teammates haven\u2019t exactly cleared out their respective divisions. But no one has talked as big as Dannis.<\/span><\/p>\n

Like his famous mentor, Danis does a pretty good job of acting like he belongs in the company of greats. To him, finding success in MMA takes the same recipe as in jiu-jitsu.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWork your ass off, and you get the results, so it\u2019s the same thing in that sense,\u201d he said. \u201cBut it\u2019s just different in the media sense, but it\u2019s just an adjustment. I want to adapt to every situation, so I\u2019m just going with the flow and feeling everything out with my first time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was in the back, it felt like a funeral. Everybody was daunting, and I was like, \u2018What the hell\u2019s going on here?\u2019 I feel great. I feel ready to go. I feel fresh, and I\u2019m going to take this man out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Walker (2-3 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) comes into the bout at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., on a two-fight skid. It took a while for Bellator to find an opponent for the Paramout-televised fight on Saturday.<\/span><\/p>\n

But Danis said time is no object when you\u2019re as ready as he is.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been doing martial arts since I was 15,\u201d Danis said. \u201cSo I don\u2019t see it as a couple of months thing \u2013 I see it as a lifetime thing. I\u2019ve been a martial artist since I was a kid. It\u2019s basically who I am. It\u2019s not anything I need to prepare for, because I\u2019ve been doing it my whole life. I\u2019ve been fighting my whole life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

On Saturday, the world will see whether that preparation pays off, and whether Danis\u2019 future is as golden as McGregor\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n
