Bills trade up to grab Josh Allen at No. 7 in NFL draft amid controversy over QB’s tweets<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

A turbulent 24 hours for Josh Allen was capped by the Wyoming quarterback being taken No. 7 overall by the Buffalo Bills in the first round of Thursday’s NFL draft.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Bills moved up from the No. 12 slot in a deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who also acquired the No. 53 and 56 overall picks in the second round while giving up a seventh rounder.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Thursday, Allen apologized after tweets he made in high school, which included several posts with a racial slurs toward African-Americans, were resurfaced by Yahoo! Sports.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not the way I want to be remembered. I\u2019m not going to let this define me,\u201d Allen said in a red carpet interview with ESPN. \u201cWhatever team I go to, I\u2019m going to give them everything, show them the type of character that I am because like I said, my teammates know exactly who I am, they can vouch for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Buffalo traded Tyrod Taylor to the Cleveland Browns in March, and uncertainty continued to surround the position even after the signing of AJ McCarron. Having dispatched left tackle Cordy Glenn to the Bengals in order to move up nine spots earlier in the offseason, Buffalo faced repeated questions of whether this was the first half of a strategy to move up and land one of the class’ top quarterbacks.<\/span><\/p>\n

But general manager Brandon Beane played coy, saying after the move that he was not necessarily angling for a passer and that he might not be prepared to make another move.<\/span><\/p>\n

With a strong arm and 6-5, 237-pound build, Allen won over many with his highlight-reel throws. But he completed just 56.2% of his passes at Wyoming, and he has been battling the perception that he is an erratic thrower.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe 56% completion percentage is obviously not good enough, and it’s not going to cut it by any means, but there are a lot of variables that went into that,\u201d Allen told USA TODAY Sports’ Lindsay Jones prior to the draft. \u201cSo that preconceived notion of me being inaccurate is completely false, and I look forward to changing that over time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
