Russia slammed for trying to refute Syria chemical weapons attack<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Russia brought citizens of a Syrian town hit by a claimed chemical weapons attack to deny it happened, sparking international furor over the move.<\/span><\/p>\n

Among those shuttled before the Organisation for the Prohibition for Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in the Hague, Netherlands, was an 11-year-old boy photographed after the claimed attack this month.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The OPCW is not a theatre,” said Peter Wilson, the United Kingdom’s representative to the group, to the BBC.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Russia’s decision to misuse it is yet another Russian attempt to undermine the OPCW’s work, and in particular the work of its Fact Finding Mission investigating chemical weapons use in Syria.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The U.K. boycotted the Kremlin’s appearance, along with the United States and France, whose ambassador to the Netherlands said Russia’s testimony was a sham.<\/span><\/p>\n

“This obscene masquerade does not come as a surprise from the Syrian government, which has massacred and gassed its own people for the last seven years,” French Ambassador Philippe Lalliot said.<\/span><\/p>\n

OPCW has dispatched a team to look into the alleged attack.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hassan Diab, an 11-year-old boy photographed doused in water after the alleged attack, was flown to the Hague from Syria to testify before the group. He appeared alongside his father, who reportedly denied there was a chemical attack.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We were in the basement; we heard cries on the street that we should go to the hospital. We got scared. We went to the hospital through the tunnel,” the boy said, in line with what his dad said moments before him. “They started pouring water on me at the hospital. I don’t know why. After that they took me to a different place. Thank you.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Other photos showed dead children and adults foaming at the mouth with burn marks, signatures of a chemical attack.<\/span><\/p>\n

Survivors have also recounted the overwhelming smell of chlorine after an April 7 bombing of Douma, a town outside of the Syrian capital previously held by rebels.<\/span><\/p>\n

People who fled the town once Bashar Assad’s government took control were divided on who was to blame. Some said it was the Assad regime, while others blamed the rebel faction that had controlled the city.<\/span><\/p>\n

President Trump placed the blame squarely on Assad, shaming Russia for supporting the strongman’s regime amid allegations it used chemical weapons on its own people. The U.S. hit Syrian airbases in response to the attack.<\/span><\/p>\n

Russian Ambassador Alexander Shulgin said Thursday that Hassan’s testimony suggested the attack may not have happened.<\/span><\/p>\n

“He’s proving \u2014 an innocent child \u2014 he’s telling the truth,” he said. “You know that out of the baby’s mouth comes the truth, and today that truth you don’t want to hear.”<\/span><\/p>\n

But the U.S., in a joint statement with the U.K. and France, argued the evidence said otherwise.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Photographs and videos, numerous and mutually reinforcing, have been authenticated,” the statement read. “The symptoms of more than 500 patients who presented on the same day of the attack in health care facilities undoubtedly corresponded to gas intoxication.”<\/span><\/p>\n
