What Is an Incel? Explaining a Term Used by the Toronto Van Attack Suspect<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Minutes before turning his van onto a Toronto sidewalk on Monday, killing 10 people and injuring more than a dozen others, Alek Minassian wrote a post on Facebook, according to the Canadian authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n

In it, he praised Elliot Rodger, who in 2014 shot and killed six people in Isla Vista, Calif. Mr. Minassian, 25, also wrote of an \u201cincel rebellion,\u201d referring to a term, shorthand for \u201cinvoluntary celibates,\u201d used online by a community of misogynists to describe themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Incel Rebellion has already begun!\u201d the posting read. \u201cWe will overthrow all the Chads and Stacys! All hail Supreme Gentleman Elliot Rodger!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a brief guide to the incel community, including some of the coded language, such as \u201cChads\u201d and \u201cStacys,\u201d used by its members.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who are incels?<\/span><\/p>\n

Incels are misogynists who are deeply suspicious and disparaging of women, whom they blame for denying them their right to sexual intercourse.<\/span><\/p>\n

Theirs is a relatively new take on a \u201cmale supremacist\u201d worldview, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.<\/span><\/p>\n

The center, which closely tracks hate speech, reports that incels grew out of the pickup artist movement, which takes a manipulative approach to seduction, but is rejected by incels who find it too humanizing of women.<\/span><\/p>\n

At their most extreme, incels have advocated rape and other forms of violence against women.<\/span><\/p>\n

What does Elliot Rodger have to do with this?<\/span><\/p>\n

That advocacy for violence is where Mr. Rodger, a self-described incel who left behind misogynistic ramblings, fits in.<\/span><\/p>\n

Like Mr. Minassian, other incels have praised Mr. Rodger, calling him a \u201cSupreme Gentleman,\u201d \u201csaint,\u201d \u201chero\u201d or \u201cbrother,\u201d and praising his violent rampage.<\/span><\/p>\n

About a day before his 2014 killing spree, Mr. Rodger uploaded a video titled \u201cElliot Rodger\u2019s Retribution\u201d in which he complained of his own rejection and vowed to punish all women for his loneliness.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGirls gave their affection and sex and love to other men but never to me,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m 22 years old, and I\u2019m still a virgin. I\u2019ve never even kissed a girl.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Some self-proclaimed incels have even reportedly begun praising Mr. Minassian in the same way the community revered Mr. Rodger.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who are \u2018Chads\u2019 and \u2018Stacys\u2019?<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Minassian\u2019s vow to \u201coverthrow all the Chads and Stacys\u201d mirrors language used by Mr. Rodger and other incels. Men who are successful with women are known as \u201cChads,\u201d while the women who reject incels are known as \u201cStacys.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the \u2018Incel Rebellion\u2019?<\/span><\/p>\n

Incels sometimes talk of an incel or \u201cbeta\u201d uprising, a movement led by beta males, like themselves, to overthrow what they view as the oppressive feminism of society.<\/span><\/p>\n

Where do incels congregate?<\/span><\/p>\n

Incels have and still do post on Reddit, though the site, one of the world\u2019s most popular online gathering places, barred its incel community in November, citing a policy against hateful and violent speech.<\/span><\/p>\n

That community, a subreddit, had about 40,000 members, though it isn\u2019t clear how many of those members subscribed to the philosophy and how many merely tracked it out of curiosity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Incels have nonetheless found or returned to other online gathering places, including 4chan, an anonymous message board that has for years been home to a dark, and sometimes disturbing, corner of the web, often characterized by such misogyny.<\/span><\/p>\n

In his Facebook post, Mr. Minassian reportedly described himself as \u201cPrivate (Recruit) Minassian\u201d and expressed a desire to \u201cspeak to Sgt 4chan.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
