But it can also be interpreted as leaving the door open,\u201d said one source, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">\u201cWe are saying to them, \u2018If you want to be treated as a great power, then work with us\u2019,\u201d the source said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas called on Moscow to help resolve the crisis in Syria, where Russia and Iran are backing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">\u201cWe know that the Syrian conflict, for example, can\u2019t be solved without Russia. But it must then come up with constructive offers in return,\u201d he told reporters on Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">The G7 meeting is the first high-level gathering of the allies since the United States, France and Britain launched 105 missiles targeting chemical weapons facilities in Syria in retaliation for a suspected poison gas attack on April 7.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">The Western countries blame Assad for the attack that killed dozens of people. The Syrian government and its Russian ally deny involvement or using poison gas on April 7.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">The State Department official said there was broad support among the ministers for the U.N.-led \u201cGeneva Process\u201d that outlines a political transition in Syria in which Assad would step aside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">\u201cThe political process that comes out of any war has ups and downs. The Geneva Process is the present focus of making political progress,\u201d the official added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">The United States said its priorities also included Iran\u2019s \u201cmalign\u201d regional activities and ending North Korea\u2019s nuclear programme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">The foreign ministers\u2019 talks, due to end late on Monday, will help prepare for a G7 leaders\u2019 summit in Canada in early June. The G7 comprises the United States, Britain, Canada, Germany, France, Italy and Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">The G7 last week condemned what it said was a Russian nerve agent attack in Britain. A senior official from one G7 nation said ministers were deeply worried about what the group saw as a pattern of Russia misbehavior going back years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">Russia denies any involvement in the nerve attack on British soil in March.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">The meetings are not expected to discuss further punitive measures against Moscow because Britain, France, Germany and Italy are members of the 28-nation European Union, which must agree collectively on what steps to take, said two diplomats briefed on the meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">The issue, however, was likely to be raised in bilateral talks between G7 members, one official added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">The foreign ministers also discussed negotiations under way between the United States, Britain, France and Germany on making changes to a 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and six leading powers, the State Department official said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">U.S. President Donald Trump gave an ultimatum on Jan. 12 to the European powers, saying they must agree to \u201cfix the terrible flaws\u201d of the deal or he would refuse to extend the U.S. sanctions relief on Iran that it calls for. U.S. sanctions will resume unless Trump again waives them on May 12.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">Iran says its nuclear programme is only for peaceful purposes. It has said it will stick to the accord as long as the other signatories respect it but will \u201cshred\u201d the deal if Washington pulls out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Saturday Iran\u2019s atomic agency was ready with \u201cexpected and unexpected\u201d reactions if the United States pulls out of the 2015 agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">\u201cOne of the things we are concerned about now is the (deal) and where that is headed,\u201d British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said on the sidelines of the G7 meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">The ministers had \u201cgood discussions\u201d on North Korea\u2019s nuclear programs as Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un prepare to meet in late May or early June.
