Heat center Hassan Whiteside blames coaching after another bad game: ‘I’m not involved’<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

After another poor performance in Game 3 of Miami’s first-round series with the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday night, Heat center Hassan Whiteside suggested that head coach Erik Spoelstra may be the one to blame for his postseason struggles.<\/span><\/p>\n

“It’s just different, man. I feel like our offense is a lot different,” Whiteside told reporters in Miami. “I’m not involved in as many dribble-handoffs as I was and post-ups as I was during the regular season. That’s what coach wants. Coach wants me to just be in a corner and set picks. I mean, that’s what he wants so I’ve just got to trust it.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Whiteside’s final stat-line in the Game 3 loss? Five points, two rebounds, one block and four fouls in 13 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n

He has taken seven total shots in the series and is averaging 3.7 points, four rebounds, 1.3 blocks and 13.6 minutes \u2014 a stark contrast to the 14 points, 11.4 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 25.3 minutes he averaged during the regular season.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fellow 7-footer Kelly Olynyk, meanwhile, has seen his role increase against the Sixers. He leads the team in minutes (33.3 per game) and is averaging 15.3 points while shooting 51.9% from the field and 58.3% from beyond the arc.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I want to get more rebounds out there. I want to get more minutes out there,” Whiteside said. “I’m going to keep trusting coach’s decision-making. Even with the fouls I still could have been out there. I wouldn’t have fouled out.”<\/span><\/p>\n

As for Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid, who returned from a 10-game absence Thursday night and tallied 23 points and seven rebounds in 30 minutes, Whiteside said, “He lives a big-man’s dream. He gets the ball, he gets the post-ups, he posts up every other play and they pretty much run a lot of stuff through him and Ben Simmons.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Asked how he can be more involved moving forward, Whiteside said he’s trying to figure it out.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I guess I’ve got to crash, try to score off offensive rebounds maybe, keep running the floor and try to get alley-oops,” he said. “But other than that, it’s a lot different than the regular season. It’s a lot different.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Whiteside, who signed a four-year, $98 million deal with Miami two summers ago, was fined an undisclosed amount by the Heat earlier this month for comments detrimental to the team \u2014 a response to his remarks expressing frustration with his role.<\/span><\/p>\n

A lot of teams don’t have a good center,” Whiteside said at the time. ” … It’s (expletive). It’s really (expletive). There are a lot of teams that could use a center.”<\/span><\/p>\n

He later apologized for his comments, saying he was “frustrated.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“I get real competitive,” he said. “I really want to be out there.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The Sixers lead the series 2-1. Game 4 is Saturday afternoon in Miami.<\/span><\/p>\n
