The Making Of The Huawei P20: ‘Internal Arguments’ Over Notch And Color<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

The Huawei P20 series, especially the Pro, is easily Huawei\u2019s best phone yet and something of a major breakthrough for the Chinese company\u2019s mobile division. In the past, Huawei phones had always gotten solid to good reviews from western media, but there was often an underlining sense of snark. That \u201cit\u2019s good, for a Chinese phone\u201d vibe. The P20 Pro, however, is getting \u201cthis phone is great, period\u201d praise.<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, if we\u2019re talking just low light photography, it\u2019s the best performer by far. And it\u2019s not even just my opinion at this point, but the consensus among reviewers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another consensus among tech media is that the P20\u2019s \u201cTwilight\u201d color, which has a gradient, shifting purple-ish tone, is one of the best looking paint jobs any phone has ever had.<\/span><\/p>\n

But that color almost didn\u2019t happen.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a private interview at Huawei\u2019s Analyst Summit in Shenzhen, the company\u2019s vice president of handset product line told me that, \u201cMany on the team thought the [Twilight] color was too much, they thought we should stick with pure colors.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u201cBut I told them, \u2018You do not represent everybody.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Li said the mobile department\u2019s decision to go with that bold color is an active attempt on the company\u2019s part to think outside the box and not be, in his words, \u201cso conservative.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Li said there was a learning moment for him and his team, and it has to do with the divisive iPhone X notch that is now on the P20 Pro (and soon just about every Android handset.)<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Li, Huawei actually thought of the notch idea \u201cthree to four years ago,\u201d but the company didn\u2019t go with it out of concern that consumers wouldn\u2019t accept it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cConsumers, especially those in China, like symmetry, and the notch is not perfect in Chinese culture. They like squares or circles\u2014like rounded corners [of the display]. That\u2019s perfect.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But the notch, despite breaking symmetry, is indeed useful, especially on Android, where the status bar is necessary (more so than on the iOS, in my opinion) but there is almost always empty, unused space in the middle. The notch effectively pushes the status bar up a bit, giving users more screen. I came to this realization (after initial skepticism too) the past couple of months, as I used the Vivo V9. I\u2019m an Android guy so it pains me to admit this, but Apple was right: the notch works.<\/span><\/p>\n

Li gave Apple credit too. In fact, he used the C word: \u201c[Apple] using the notch was courage,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m confident Li used the \u201cC word\u201d sincerely, and not as a dig at the now infamous iPhone 7 launch event where the company said removing the headphone jack took \u201ccourage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe missed our chance to [pioneer] with the notch design,\u201d Li lamented. \u201cBecause we were too conservative and cautious.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He said Huawei is now much more experimental and willing to push the boundaries. \u201cWe will be more bold.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Putting three cameras on a phone was a bold move. Speaking as a reviewer of many Chinese handsets\u2014which all seem to pile on hardware for the sake of filling filling spec sheets\u2014I can say that I initially thought the triple-camera setup would be overkill, and I\u2019m sure plenty of other reviewers thought that too. But then we tried the P20\u2014and Huawei proved everybody wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n
