Trump Denounces F.B.I. Raid on His Lawyer’s Office as ‘Attack on Our Country’<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Update: President Trump had attorney-client privilege on his mind early Tuesday, tweeting out his frustrations a day after the F.B.I. raided the office and hotel room of his personal attorney. \u201cAttorney\u2013client privilege is dead!\u201d Mr. Trump wrote, in what appeared to be a reference to federal agents seizing records belonging to Michael D. Cohen, the president\u2019s personal attorney.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA TOTAL WITCH HUNT!\u201d the president wrote in a separate tweet, repeating a favorite phrase Mr. Trump has used to describe the government\u2019s ongoing investigation into Russia\u2019s 2016 election interference and possible coordination with some of his associates.<\/span><\/p>\n

WASHINGTON \u2014 President Trump angrily unloaded on his top law enforcement officials on Monday night, complaining that the F.B.I. \u201cbroke into\u201d the office of Michael D. Cohen, his personal lawyer, and assailing two early-morning raids as a \u201cdisgraceful situation\u201d and an \u201cattack on our country in a true sense.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The president repeatedly said that the raids were part of a \u201cwitch hunt\u201d against him that has been conducted since he took office, and he mused about the possibility that he might soon fire Robert S. Mueller III, the special counsel in the Russia inquiry.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll see what may happen,\u201d Mr. Trump said as he began a meeting with senior military officials to discuss responses to a chemical attack in Syria. \u201cMany people have said, \u2018You should fire him.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The president railed against Jeff Sessions, the attorney general, for recusing himself in the Russia investigation, and he blasted the F.B.I. for failing to investigate Hillary Clinton, \u201cwhere there are crimes.\u201d He also lashed out at Rod J. Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, who is overseeing the Russia investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Trump delivered the emotional tirade hours after federal officials raided Mr. Cohen\u2019s office and hotel room, seizing business records, emails and documents, including information related to a payment that Mr. Cohen made to a pornographic film actress.<\/span><\/p>\n

The raids were in part the result of a referral to federal officials by Mr. Mueller. Mr. Trump called Mr. Mueller\u2019s team \u201cthe most biased group of people\u201d and said that it contained mostly Democrats and some Republicans who worked for President Barack Obama.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat is really now in a whole new level of unfairness,\u201d Mr. Trump said of the raids involving Mr. Cohen. Officials said the White House learned about the raids from Mr. Cohen\u2019s lawyer after they were carried out but before they became public knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Trump has long complained that the Russia inquiry was a politically motivated attempt to undermine the legitimacy of his election victory. And he has been highly critical of Mr. Sessions and the F.B.I. for failing to adequately investigate Mrs. Clinton\u2019s use of a private email server.<\/span><\/p>\n

But the aggressive move by federal officials against Mr. Cohen, the president\u2019s longtime personal lawyer, appeared to strike a particularly sensitive nerve. Mr. Cohen, who works for Mr. Trump\u2019s private company, has long been considered one of the president\u2019s closest business confidants.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Trump reacted to the raids without any prompting from reporters, who had been brought into the Cabinet Room where the president was meeting with Jim Mattis, the secretary of defense; John R. Bolton, the new national security adviser; and other military officials to discuss the situation in Syria. As the cameras began rolling, Mr. Trump immediately condemned the actions against Mr. Cohen.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo, I just heard that they broke into the office of one of my personal attorneys, a good man, and it\u2019s a disgraceful situation,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a total witch hunt. I\u2019ve been saying it for a long time. I\u2019ve wanted to keep it down.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It was unclear what Mr. Trump meant by saying he \u201cwanted to keep it down.\u201d He went on to criticize Mr. Mueller\u2019s team for examining the president\u2019s associates.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey only keep looking at us. So they find no collusion, and then they go from there and they say, \u2018Well, let\u2019s keep going,\u2019 and they raid an office of a personal attorney early in the morning, and I think it\u2019s a disgrace,\u201d Mr. Trump said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The president also defended his decision to fire James B. Comey as F.B.I. director, saying that \u201cI turned out to do the right thing because you look at all of the things that he\u2019s done and the lies and you look at what\u2019s gone on at the F.B.I.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He criticized Mr. Rosenstein for having \u201csigned a FISA warrant,\u201d apparently a reference to the role Mr. Rosenstein played in authorizing the wiretap of a Trump associate in the Russia inquiry. Republicans have been highly critical of the warrant, saying the F.B.I. persuaded judges to authorize it on false pretenses.<\/span><\/p>\n

The president\u2019s suggestion that he might fire Mr. Mueller drew swift condemnations from Capitol Hill, where Democrats and Republicans alike have warned that doing so would cross a dangerous political and legal line.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf the president is thinking of using this raid to fire Special Counsel Mueller or otherwise interfere with the chain of command in the Russia probe, we Democrats have one simple message for him: Don\u2019t,\u201d said Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic leader.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSpecial Counsel Mueller, a Republican, has uncovered a deep and detailed pattern of Russian interference in our elections that has led to indictments and guilty pleas,\u201d Mr. Schumer added. \u201cIt has also led to the Trump administration itself leveling sanctions against Russian individuals for meddling in our elections, proof that it\u2019s not a so-called witch hunt.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
