Iran Tries to Unify Currency to Halt Rial’s Record Slump<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Iran will try to unify its currency starting Tuesday and control sales of the dollar in a bid to stem a record decline in the rial\u2019s value on the unregulated market.<\/span><\/p>\n

The government will sell the U.S. dollar at a rate of 42,000 rials to all individuals and businesses, Iran\u2019s First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri said in a statement recorded for state TV and published on its website, adding that enemies of the Islamic Republic and of the government were behind the instability.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jahangiri said the move will effectively unify Iran\u2019s currency, which has been trading in a two-tier system for several years \u2014- the Central Bank of Iran controls an official rate for business traders and companies, and the unregulated market of commercial, Main Street currency vendors and unlicensed dealers has used a higher rate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Anyone found selling the dollar at rates higher than 42,000 rials \u201cwill be dealt with severely\u201d by judicial authorities and the police, Jahangiri said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe do not officially recognize any other rate than this one,” he said. \u201cFrom tomorrow, any other price that\u2019s offered in the market will be considered contraband, in the same way that illegal drugs are contraband.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier today the rial slid to a record low of 60,000 rials against the dollar on the unregulated market, according to Tasnim News agency. Jahangiri said the sudden decline was \u201cunnatural and unprecedented\u201d because tens of billions of dollars worth of foreign currency had flowed into Iran in recent weeks from the country\u2019s export revenues and this showed that a wider political plot sought to discredit the government of President Hassan Rouhani and foment instability.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s natural that our enemies and opponents, especially the Americans, after the nuclear deal was agreed and after Trump took office, have made great efforts to try and present Iran\u2019s economy as turbulent and try to discourage anyone from working with Iran,\u201d Jahangiri said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Trump administration is nearing a critical decision on its participation in Iran\u2019s nuclear deal, and political feuding at home raises pressure on Rouhani to deliver a stronger economy for ordinary Iranians. Traders have also been accused of deliberately driving the currency lower with speculative bets.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many businesses were forced to halt work amid the uncertainty created over prices and the availability of imported materials.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAfter speaking to my usual printer, I\u2019ve had to cancel a project because they weren\u2019t selling anything,\u201d said Payam, a 38-year-old in Tehran who owns a small advertising and publishing company. \u201cI was also planning to advertise for new personnel on Saturday — I\u2019ve also canceled that plan now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
