Jets pull their offer to Ndamukong Suh, why that’s probably a good thing<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

The Jets had a change of heart over the weekend, pulling their substantial offer to perennial All-Pro defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.<\/span><\/p>\n

And it\u2019s probably for the best.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jets CEO Christopher Johnson said after talking it over with general manager Mike Maccagnan, the team decided to rescind its proposal to Suh \u2014 the five-time Pro Bowler said previously that it was the biggest contract offer he had received.<\/span><\/p>\n

“On reflection, and in concert with Mike, we’ve rescinded the offer to Suh,” Johnson told reporters Sunday at the NFL owners meetings in Orlando, Fla. “It just didn’t seem to be in keeping with our longer-term plan.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Johnson said that he wasn\u2019t involved in the initial offer to Suh. But Johnson admitted that once he became aware of it, he discussed the matter with Maccagnan and was part of the decision to take the offer off the table.<\/span><\/p>\n

Adding Suh would have made sense in one way for the Jets: on the field. They need a pass rusher after the departure of Muhammad Wilkerson and Suh, still a dominant force, could have made the defensive line one of the Jets\u2019 strengths.<\/span><\/p>\n

But in most ways, a Suh-Jets marriage wouldn\u2019t have made much sense.<\/span><\/p>\n

At 31, Suh is older than the other players the Jets have targeted in this rebuilding process. The details of the Jets\u2019 offer haven\u2019t surfaced, but Johnson admitted Sunday it was \u201ca pretty high offer \u2026 it\u2019s a lot of money.\u201d The Jets have a lot of cap space, but spending it on a veteran like Suh would have gone against their plan of building for the future.<\/span><\/p>\n

Suh also has a reputation for being a dirty player \u2014 he\u2019s been fined $620,284 in eight NFL seasons \u2014 and is not regarded as a positive presence in the locker room. The Jets have worked hard to build a strong locker room culture \u2014 the vibe was far better in 2017, despite the five-win season \u2014 and adding Suh could have disrupted that.<\/span><\/p>\n

But Johnson wouldn\u2019t answer directly when asked why the Jets decided to remove themselves from the Suh sweepstakes.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I had a lot of discussion with Mike about this,” Johnson said. “And I think that our thinking just changed a bit. That’s where I have to leave it.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Johnson said that coach Todd Bowles wasn’t part of the decision, which stands with the Jets’ power structure — Bowles handles the coaching, Maccagnan the draft and signing players — but is a little strange because of previous reports that Bowles had made a pitch to Suh.<\/span><\/p>\n

Johnson also said he hasn’t been involved in the Jets’ many other signings during free agency. It’s obvious he intervened on the Suh signing, but Johnson still tried to downplay his role.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSaying I stepped in is somewhat overstating the case,” Johnson said. “In discussion with Mike, looking into what our plan is, it became apparent to the two of us that this just didn’t work.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The Jets certainly could and should have handled this better, by getting on the same page before they made the offer to Suh. But in the end, Johnson was probably right to step in.<\/span><\/p>\n

There was a chance that Suh to the Jets would have worked, but there\u2019s a bigger chance the partnership would have ended badly.<\/span><\/p>\n
